Here's a sentence that would have been incomprehensible to me two years ago: I wrote some short fiction for the new issue of @skatejawn . Link's up there.

I talked with @tjrogers about what to post for the latest Rules of Skateboarding. Also worth noting the triumphant return of day-one Rules artist, @cosmestudio !

New Year, New ‘Rules’. Skate Bylines is excited to welcome Ian Browning and his ‘Rules of Skateboarding’ column 📝 @IBrowning is a journalist and essaying based in New York. His ‘Rules’ series unpacks skateboarding etiquette through interviews with notable characters, professionals and media figures. Browning’s journalism explores the intersection of skateboarding and wider culture. His ‘Rules’ series initially ran on @villagepsychic from 2017 to 2024 and his work has been published in @quartersnacks , Simple Magic, @plankskatemag , @closerskateboarding and more. Browning’s Quartersnacks story ‘Civic Center — A Profile of the LES Skatepark at Ten Years’ was the subject of the first Skate Bylines podcast, which he appeared as a guest on. “It’s important to have real journalism in skateboarding, and I’m glad to be part of delivering it. It’s great to have a place to continue to explore the nuances that make skateboarding interesting,” says Browning of working with Skate Bylines. His ‘Rules of Skateboarding’ back catalogue is being added to Skate Bylines through January with current instalments featuring Tony Hawk, Mark Suciu, Briana King, Josh Stewart and more now live skatebylines.com (link in bio). Browning’s first Bylines original in the ‘Rules’ series will be published later this month. 🖊️ @cosmestudio 📷 @cnkerr

A shop video has to be one of the purest expressions of skating. I wrote about what makes them magical and a few of my favorites for this season’s @closerskateboarding !

Two posts in two days! 🚨They’re gonna redo Borough Hall🚨 If you live in NYC (or plan to visit and bask in the radiant glow of chill plaza skating) please try to make it to the meeting on the 15th and make some (polite) noise about keeping skateboarding a part of the space! (Maybe without aluminum coping ledges or a 70-foot-long-but-somehow-three-feet-tall snake run?!?)

I wrote about a skate trip, apizza, and a time my wife thought she saw me die for The Stopgap. Louis shot the photos! Link’s up there.

Lots of people are looking for a reprieve from cabin fever these days. Fret not! The Rules of Skateboarding returns, with Ryan Lay talking what makes a good skate trip. Just in time for Slow Impact.

We all got we wanted (Sabretooth tiger face paint and a Tage closeup, teenage babysitter Zach Benson goal, Tuch’s hatty, and the kids staying asleep from the car seats to bed) for the first family Sabres game. Thanks, Grammy and Papa Gerry.

Finding The Through Line: The Civic Center of New York City Skateboarding with Ian Browning — live now at Skate Bylines and wherever you get your podcasts🗽 (link in bio) In our debut episode we’re going for a roll under the Manhattan Bridge to explore park space in New York City with journalist @ibrowning through the lens of the Lower East Side skatepark. Describing L.E.S. as the “civic centre” of New York skateboarding in a @quartersnacks story published for L.E.S.’s tenth anniversary in 2022, Browning set out to understand where skateparks fit into the ecosystem of NYC’s municipality. Exploring how his story came together we touch on how New York itself grew in importance to skate culture over the past decade and finding the through lines in journalism which connect the ordinary to the world at large. 📝🎙️🎬 written, hosted and edited by @farrangolding 👨🏻‍💻 featuring @ibrowning 📷 photography courtesy of @cnkerr Listen on: 🎤 Soundcloud 📻 Apple Podcasts 🎵 Spotify 📺 YouTube 💻 skatebylines.com

Speaking of procrastinating writing, I talked with Farran along a rad cast of skate writers, photographers, videographers and brand managers about my experiences pitching stories for @skatebylines . Fun read; @farrangolding worked Jimmy Breslin into the intro and in general, has something cool going on there (including art by @mostlyskateboarding ) Give it a follow!

Getting a lot of photo organization done (so I’m procrastinating writing again.) Some #portra800 from Hither Hills, and big man shot the last one of me skating the breathtaking Eero Sarrinen barn in New Haven in ACG Mocs on a disposable 35mm camera. Do not try to skate in ACG Mocs.

I engaged in some of my favorite activities (reporting, drinking with chefs, eating after midnight, deriding the late Kellogg’s Diner, etc) while working on this piece about New York’s diminishing late-night dining options for the first issue of @plankskatemag . Copies are available in finer skateshops or the Plank store. Stoked to be a part of this one—the mag is very, very good.
