The setups and the final images. I drove out to the Mojave Desert Lava Tubes two weekends ago only to discover my car could not make the final 5 mile trip down the ultra soft sandy road. I got a bit stuck, but managed to back myself out of there, unable to reach the tubes. It was 105 degrees and I wasn’t about to haul my bag with the large format cameras and lenses 5 miles and 5 miles out in the heat. So I retreated back home determined to make another attempt soon with a capable vehicle. My buddy @timjkam let me borrow his Jeep on Monday so I could successfully make the trip, and that easily did the trick. There was a couple walking along the road whose car also got stuck in the sand, but they were going to walk the rest of the way until I offered to give them a lift for the couple of remaining miles. Do not attempt to go to the lava tubes without a proper off-road vehicle! Once inside I happily scouted for the compositions I wanted to shoot of the incredible light beams and spent an awful long time trying to determine my light metering of the scenes. I shot 5 sheets of 4x5 black and white film, and 5 shots of color on my medium format which I haven’t developed yet but will get to this weekend. I couldn’t be much happier with how these large format shots turned out and am now very excited to see how the color shots will look. I’ll definitely be making some prints of these, I need to see them up close and big to appreciate all the detail.

A collection of film photos on various different cameras from a few different trips out to one of my favorite places in the desert, Roy’s on Route 66 in the Mojave Desert. If only I could go back in time to stay at the motel on a road trip.
