The Breakdown Pt. 6: Mixing hard lights with soft lightđ
This setup was all about accentuating the styling of the suit! There were a lot shapes, patterns and textures that were just begging for me to use a hard light source, but I needed to blend that with a little soft light to balance the shadows.
This lighting setup uses only 2 lights, my hard light had a reflector and my soft light had an umbrella.
A lot of people wouldnât think to put their main light behind their subject in a studio setting; but I think this is way more interesting than just setting up a hard light source in front of your subject and shooting!
Iâm always looking to create shapes and textures with lighting.

Welcome to The Breakdown Series Pt. 2 âď¸
You all made it known that you wanted more of these breakdowns, so who am I to keep you deprived!
This series of images was a bit more complicated as far as setup, but the moodiness and shapes it creates for garments with form fitting silhouettes makes it all worth it! I promise! đđž
This is a TWO LIGHT setup. Using one Godox AD600Pro (Soft Light) w/ a 60in gridded softbox and a AD200Pro (Hard Light) w/ an Amaran Optical Snoot.
Through out the shoot I took turns with each light being the key light.
If @janay_n.barnes was placed directly on the wall, the AD200pro (Hard Light) was the key, creating hard shadows that accentuated the textures on the dress. BUT if she stepped off of the wall, then the AD600Pro (Soft Light) became the Key light, creating a wrap of light around the curves of her silhouette!
Loved the diversity of this setup!

The Breakdown Pt. 5: The Two Light Fashion Setup đ
This setup needed to give âhigh fashionâ with a touch of drama. So of course we had to bring a little contrast to the party!
This is a simple TWO LIGHT setup with some modifiers to help control light direction and spill.
If youâve never used a gridded softbox, do yourself a favor and add it to the kit! Grids allow you to direct your light more intentionally and prevent the light from spreading into unwanted areas.
My rim light used a fresnel, but you can also use a reflector dish with barn doors to prevent any unnecessary light spill.

⢠What is a pussy bow blouse and why has it quietly stayed stylish for decades? đ ⢠#styleclass #giveittothem đ
Letâs get into it.
đ A pussy bow blouse is a blouse designed with long ties attached at the neckline that can be tied into a bow, knot, or left loose for a softer effect. The silhouette has remained a staple because it blends femininity, polish, and power all in one piece.
But hereâs the part nobody talks about:
The bow placement changes the visual impact on your body. đđž
đŻ If you have narrower shoulders or a smaller upper frame:
The bow can add visual width and softness to the top half of the body.
đŻ If you carry fullness in the bust:
A large, oversized bow may create more volume than you want. Instead, try a softer tie, slimmer fabric, or leave the ties untied for balance.
đŻ If you want to elongate your frame:
Leaving the ties draped vertically creates long lines that can make the body appear longer and leaner.
And, letâs go deeperâŚ
The reason some pieces feel âtoo muchâ or âtoo oldâ isnât always the garmentâitâs usually because the silhouette isnât aligned with your body type or personal style.
Because no piece is outdated when itâs worn with intention.
Comment âBLUEPRINTâ if youâre ready to learn more about which silhouettes work best for your specific body type and why!
⢠You arenât afraid of prints. Youâre afraid of getting it wrong. đ ⢠#styleclass #giveittothem đ
Depending on your specific shape, youâll find that certain patterns will have ditterent effects on your appearance. Here are a tew tips on how to master them.
1. Wear a print/pattern under a neutral piece.
Start small with something like socks, scarves, or a bag.
2. Do you! Find the pattern that works best for you, because everything ainât for every BODY.
Once you work those tips, try these to start mixing.đđž
đŻ Start with the classic prints:
Mix a classic print like polka dots or stripes with something more interesting like chevron or houndstooth to create a fun look.
đŻ Wear polar opposites:
Go crazy, kids! If you want to wear plaid and leopard together, do that! Donât get so caught up in the âmatchy-matchyâ all the time.
đŻ Wear patterns of different sizes:
Sometimes mixing prints can be as simple as wearing the same print in different scales. Donât overthink it.
đŻ Color matters:
A great tip is to pick a consistent color between two different prints to tie them together. If your top has red in the print, you can wear bottoms that also have red in another print.
Remember, that pattern placement matters and has different effects for each body type. Make sure your colors and prints work WITH you.
