When I was little, I was⦠letās just say, a āuniqueā student. My spelling was terrible, my handwriting looked like a hen had danced across the page, and I needed extra lessons after school just to keep up.
In Primary 4, my class teacher, who also tutored me after school, gave us a surprise spelling test one Monday morning. I froze. I could never spell words I hadnāt memorized, and by the time it was over, I had scored a clean zero.
Honestly, I didnāt think much of it at the time. But that afternoon, I walked into my mumās classroom (yes, my mum was also a teacher in my school) to ask her for money for snacks. She looked at me with a straight face and said, āYouāre not going to lesson again. Pack your bags, weāre going home.ā I didnāt understand why.
I later found out my teacher had dropped me from her extra lessons.
I donāt remember my mum shouting or flogging me over it; and that was unusual. In our home, no punishment often meant the disappointment ran deep.
I have plenty of failure stories. Like the time I failed my exams in secondary school and decided not to come home for the holidays. I convinced my dad that I didnāt deserve a Christmas break. I thought, āIāve failed again, so Iāll stay here and not hurt my mum by going to Lagos.ā My Dad went back home without me. She didnāt waste time the next day, she sent my uncle to come and bundle me home.
She didnāt mention my result throughout the holiday. Not once. After the holiday, I was to return to school, and she decided to take me back herself. Two hours into the journey, the straight voice came: āYinka, you need to be serious this term.ā
But thatās a story for another day.
I think now about how she must have felt: watching her child struggle and not knowing why, seeing other children excel while hers did not.
Happy birthday, Fadeke. I love you dearly. I am the age you were then, and I finally understand how you felt raising me.
P.S. The reason I was stressing you growing up? A superpower called Dyslexia.
