On Wednesday, May 13, we’ll watch the last movie in our ‘Retro Reels: the 90s’ series: The Craft (1996). Emerging as a cult favourite in the 1990s, The Craft blends teen drama with supernatural thriller elements while exploring themes of identity, belonging and female empowerment. @kaat_mon will do an introduction to The Craft. In collaboration with @hyperspace_st , @kunstacademiemaastricht , @viscomzuyd , and @lumieremaastricht . Link in my bio. #film #90s #maastricht #retroreels #thecraft gothic feminism

Theo Ploeg (@hyperspace_st ) sprak haar over haar werk Ă©n over haar favoriete (Djax-)platen. Maastricht is turning into a dead city. In the best book about cities ever published, sociologist Jane Jacobs writes, “‘Cities have the capacity of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody”. Maastricht is an example of a city not created by everyone. For years, the municipal council has only been interested in culture for the privileged. Culture that is commodified and only affordable for people with money. Class, intersectionality, and culture are deeply intertwined. A common culture plays an important role for marginalized groups in a city. Culture gives them a sense of place and purpose. The city council of Maastricht is deaf to non-privileged culture. Like most neoliberal cities, the council rules top-down rather than bottom-up, letting money prevail. In a healthy city, culture is so much more than an economic force. Culture connects people, strengthens communities, and shows people that the world can be a different place. Culture is the biggest threat to neoliberalism. Non-hierarchical platforms like Landbouwbelang (LBB) and B32 are essential to a healthy city and can’t be replaced by semi-structured, subsidized places like Griend Garage (though they are also important). Cinema Palace should be dedicated to marginal culture rather than turned into a hotel for the wealthy 1%. The real Maastricht, created by everybody instead of the few, deserves such a place. #maastricht #neoliberalism #cinemapalace #culture #citysociology sociology marginalculture subcultures

Film time again! On Wednesday, April 8, we continue our ‘Retro Reels: the 90s’ series with a documentary about British acid house group The KLF. The group was extremely influential, shaping the electronic music landscape in the late 1980s and early 1990s with their stadium house and spiritually anarchic attitude, which challenged the rise of ultra-capitalist culture. @wouter_greven and I will do an introduction to The KLF. In collaboration with @hyperspace_st , @kaat_mon , @kunstacademiemaastricht , and @lumieremaastricht . Link in my bio. #film #90s #maastricht #whokilledtheKLF #theKLF
