YOOOO it’s mail day! Zines this month dive into history made women in Durham - in music, biosciences, math, education, civil rights and more. Hyperlocal Durham patrons are getting this zine in the mail along with a mini print of the illustration commission I worked on for @dukewomenscenter - both are printed with @super_g_printlab ’s risograph, a hybrid analog/digital printmaking technique I’ve been learning. I will be stocking the vending machine with some limited edition risograph copies and mini prints as well TOMORROW so make sure you swing by this month and grab one! Shoutout to the @dukewomenscenter again for collaborating with me for Women’s History Month - grateful and privileged to be able to work with partners in the community like them.

Had a great time doing some live printmaking at the @dukewomenscenter ’s Women’s History Month kick-off last week featuring this design. I’ll be sharing more throughout the month about the women featured in this month’s zine!

āœļø Meet Our Team āœļø We wanted to shine a light on some fantastic new designs that we’ve added to our website! We refreshed our ā€œAbout Usā€ page with headshots of our staff members. But instead of standard photos, we commissioned our dear friend @klgraywill to design some hand drawn portraits of our team! The end result is absolutely adorable! Click on the link in our bio to see them in action in our website!

Limited stock! Valentine’s zine coming in hot this year with our favorite Durham dates - featuring solo, platonic, and romantic options for all kinds of budgets and interests. This one is a collab with @durhamdiningadventures whose zine you may recognize from the vending machine! There’s also a template for a date-deciding cootie catcher for the decision-paralyzed among you (we gotchu). This is stocked in the @durhamfoodhall vending machine now, but once it’s gone, it’s gone! Hyperlocal Durham subscribers will be getting copies in the mail āœŒļøšŸ’Œ

Nothing has made me more active, joyful, and creative than getting to work on this project over the last few years, and I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been there since Day 1. This machine has proven that the people of Durham are HUNGRY… FOR KNOWLEDGE! Stay tuned as we continue to add new artists and writers into the machine who are all creating unique works that will help you (re)discover Durham, whether you’re a long-time resident or a transplant. We are growing!

The @downtowndurham shop small holiday passport is HERE! And we are OBSESSED with it - for those uninitiated, here’s everything you need to know about how Hyperlocal’s interactive passport zines work: šŸ“ WHERE TO GET ONE: You pick up a free zine from the tree-lighting ceremony this Friday, 11/21 (UPDATE: Postponed till 12/6 - go join the @psltrianglenc protest at the plaza against 🧊 instead!) Hyperlocal subscribers will also be getting these bad boys in the mail šŸ’Œ You can also order copies from the online shop or grab a copy from the vending machine in the Food Hall starting in December! HOW IT WORKS: šŸ™ļø @downtowndurham has hand-picked 10 different small businesses to be featured in this year’s passport, so treat this passport zine as your shop small holiday guide! šŸ—ŗļø Turn your zine inside out to reveal the map and present it at each business you visit (you do NOT need to buy something from every shop) to receive a stamp. šŸŽ Collect each stamp to complete the map! Collect at least 5 stamps and redeem your passport for a Love Durham shirt at the Visitor Center. It was a joy and honor to illustrate the zine and map for this passport - creating little Charlie Brown peanuts-inspired characters, designing stamps based on the Durham’s historical buildings, and creating a beautiful keepsake that I hope y’all will enjoy co-creating as you complete your maps. @downtowndurham has been a champion of @hyperlocalstudios and I’m so grateful they gave me the creative reigns to make this project special. The last year under the current political administration has been difficult (and will continue to be) - shopping small is a great way to support the local community. Where you can get stamps: 🤳 Take a pic with the big tree at CCB Plaza and get your stamp at the Visitor Center šŸ“ @fateandfolkloredurham šŸ“ @parkerandotis and @parkerpapercompany šŸ“ @ashleighbakesdaily šŸ“ @exotiquedurham šŸ“ @roseandleeco and @dollysdurham šŸ“ @lettersbookshop šŸ“ @redheadhemp šŸ“ Brightleaf Square (get your stamp at @indiodurham ) šŸ“ @maxjrminiminimart and @mielbonbons_durham Good luck and have fun! šŸ‚

Notice something new in the vending machine? I’ve had this Durham edition of the lo-fi girl in my illustration folder for AGES because I couldn’t decide what season to draw outside her window. I finally decided: I won’t decide! Each season I’ll rotate in a different seasonal variation of this miniprint, so get it now before I swap it out for the winter version!

If you missed @preservationdurham ’s Queer History tour, don’t worry, I turned it into an interactive browser game! I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to work on a side-project I’ve had on the backburner for awhile now: Converting my maps into interactive digital archives in the form of a minigame. I did this using what I’ve learned about CSS/HTML/javascript from years of doing graphic design for web development and with Claude for assistive AI coding. All of the map assets, sprites, etc. are hand drawn by me. I also gotta give credit to my partner, Andrew, who is a software developer, for encouraging me and helping me with the initial setup. The repository is available publicly on my GitHub (linked in my last Patreon post) and you can play the browser game at queer.hyperlocaldurham.com (linked in my bio) - have fun exploring! I’ve been building and debugging it for the last week and I think it’s finally ready enough to share with y’all! (It is not mobile-friendly, so please try it out on desktop!) I’m really excited to use this site as a template for making more of my work accessible and interactive. Would love to hear which maps you think I should work on next, or what other features would be fun to add. My next goal is to add an inventory feature so you can collect zines and objects you encounter and complete quests that mirror the ones I’ve done in real life for Hyperlocal Durham.
