A library shaped by light, stone, and climate. Its façade and roof work together as a living system—performative, resilient, and deeply rooted in place. A high-performance envelope that bridges timeless craft and contemporary sustainability. Collaborator: @jaehun_w Imagery: @oliworksstudio

Podgorica Knowledge Commons uses rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, and green roofs further reduce potable water consumption and sustain the site’s landscape, while façades tuned to solar orientation ensure luminous yet thermally balanced interiors. The roof’s undulating form integrates vegetation, shading, and PVs, transforming it into a civic topography that connects city and mountains while actively generating energy. Collaborator: @jaehun_w

𝑷𝒐𝒅𝒈𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔 is our library conceptual design competition entry. 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐦 For centuries, libraries have evolved from stone inscriptions and papyrus scrolls to printed books and digital archives. Yet their purpose remains the same: to connect people through knowledge. As the need for storage fades, libraries have re-emerged as civic spaces that foster gathering, learning, and exchange. For the University of Montenegro, the Central University Library embodies this shift. More than a repository, it serves as the heart of the campus, where academic life meets the public realm and the values of knowledge, freedom, and innovation take form. Collaborator: @jaehun_w

𝑷𝒐𝒅𝒈𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒔 is our competition entry for the Conceptual design of the Central University Library in Podgorica. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 The site lies at the heart of the University of Montenegro campus, positioned at the intersection of the campus, mixed-use neighborhoods, and the broader urban green network. In the larger context, it is framed by the mountains that encircle Podgorica. Within this setting, the Library is envisioned as a response to multiple identities—academic, civic, cultural, and ecological—shaping a new social praxis for the University. At the same time, the site offers an opportunity to engage these identities in ways that are both meaningful and transformative. Collaborator: @jaehun_w Imagery: @oliworksstudio

Soft Rooms forms the spatial framework for [dis]assemblies, an exhibition curated by Tania Tovar @taniushkatt and Zhicheng Xu at the Rice University School of Architecture @ricearch , which opened in March. Spanning two levels, the exhibition unfolds across four thematically distinct yet spatially interconnected zones, arranged without hierarchy. This non-linear layout removes any prescribed path, encouraging visitors to begin their experience from either the ground floor or the upper level. The exhibition presents four conceptual threads—Social Resistance, Material Cultures, Other-than-Human Agency, and Experimental Preservation—developed through collaborative research in the ARCH 402 and 403 studios. These themes are framed by translucent textile partitions—soft rooms—that define each zone while maintaining openness. Rather than enclosing, these permeable boundaries foster a sense of continuity, allowing visitors to encounter each work not as an isolated artifact, but as part of a larger, evolving conversation.

Lodgers had a great time in Lisbon! Initiated at the MIT Department of Architecture @mitarchitecture , Lodgers is a project of a two-year-long investigation into the local material cycle, construction technique, ecological condition, and knowledge production in Nevada, particularly the Black Rock Desert and Pyramid Lake region. In September, Lodgers traveled to Lisbon as part of the 2022 Lisbon Architecture Triennale @trienaldelisboa . Next year, the project team will travel to Nevada for the second round of material research and onsite prototyping! Stay Tuned! Project team: Zhicheng Xu, Mengqi Moon He, ApeWood by João Maria Bernardino, Stratton Coffman, Calvin Zhong, Wuyahuang Li

-Lodgers- is under construction! We are working with @apewood_ , a fantastic design and fabrication workshop led by @apetato based in Lisbon, to fabricate and install the pavilion at the Palácio Sinel de Cordes. The photo shows an earlier installation we did at MIT in Cambridge with @calzhone ! #design #architecture #exhibition #ecology
