What if Renaissance perspective never sought to show Space in Painting? I am very pleased that my E-BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE from @bloomsburypublishing ! Link to order and excerpt in Bio. The book is a critical history of space as a cultural construction— but it is equally a love letter to painting. Paperback release March 19th. The cover is Giovanni di Paolo. Working at the same time as Masaccio, Giovanni was a singular artist of wit and intelligence— toying with the emerging structures and strictures of perspective. Does the Met’s “The Creation and Expulsion” truly depict the Creation? Or is God and his seraphim pushing the Cosmos toward the sinners and is up to something else? Is there a text that could elucidate Giovanni’s unique picture? 1. Book Cover: The Trouble With Space in Painting: A Critical History James Hyde, Aesthetics and Contemporary Art Series. 2, Giovanni di Paolo - “Saint John the Baptist Entering the Wilderness”, tempera on wood panel, c. 1445. Delighted to announce a book launch event at A_Place Gallery, Thursday 7 May, 6-8pm. The event marks the UK launch of painter James Hyde’s book “The Trouble with Space in Painting: A Critical History”, published by Bloomsbury Academic. Hyde presents a historically detailed investigation into how the concept of space in art emerged. This is the first critical study of pictorial space as a historical construction and Hyde makes the case that it should be seen as a concept bound to historical circumstance, developing, often contentiously, in philosophy, mathematics and science before becoming common in 20th-century theorisations of art. Hyde will be in conversation with Andrew Mummery from 6:30pm. Admission to the event is free. Our current exhibition, 'Array' by Isaac Willis will also be available to view during the course of the event. @hyde.james @amg5glasgow

Please join us on Friday, April 24, from 6 to 8 PM for a book launch celebrating James Hyde’s (@hyde.james ) new publication, 'The Trouble with Space in Painting.' The event will feature a discussion between Hyde and artist Josiah McElheny. This eccentric book is a century-spanning investigation into one of the most common yet least examined descriptors in painting—space. What the word means and how it became part of the artistic lexicon is explored through examinations of the Italian Primitives, St. Augustine, Giordano Bruno, Cubism, Hilda af Klimt, and many more. Hyde thoughtfully pursues one of the most intriguing issues in visual art: the human drive to describe the three-dimensional world within a two-dimensional format.
