a couple months ago, Z and I went to LA to catch the @ocmamuseum california biennial and @soulsides ’ show about japanese car culture at @jamuseum . a one for me, one for you-type thing, i promised to take him to universal studios. @emy_rya of the great @emilys_sassy_lime showed us around the biennial—the title is inspired by ESL’s sole album—and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, a complicated and beautiful exploration of “adolescence.” (did you know adolescence can technically stretch into one’s thirties?? me neither.) the way esl’s room spoke to the @thelindalindas next to it, seeing @deannatempleton ’s ongoing series ‘what she said’ a few yards away from @griseldarosasss and @stanyakahn , the room curated by local teens, it was so thoughtfully assembled and insanely moving. SoCal folks - go see it before it closes. anyhow thoughts about what it means to be young/old lingered at the theme park, the fears of raising a child etc. I nearly hurled (not because of the Heavy Pondering). wrote about it for @newyorkermag link in bio

tomorrow/sunday at @pioneerworks press play winter fair/extravaganza. @andrewkuostudio x @_suspended_in_time_ tributes to goldie and ltj bukem in t-shirt and hat form. the latest two issues of @_suspended_in_time_ my zine about music and life—looking at 90s club photographer @alice_a2studio and the 80s filipino american mobile dj scene, respectively. a few leftover NIN X iMac shirts from last year (and maybe some Oasis zines too). and some cardboard iPhones and iPads made by a child (free issues of his newspaper I WONDER with purchase). i think i will be at table 58

Announcing two new issues of @_suspended_in_time_ , my zine series about music and life. Issue 4 is about @alice_a2studio . She came to New York in 1990 to pursue her dream of becoming a photographer. Her first assignment was at the Sound Factory, and she immediately realized she had found her subject: the dancers. This issue looks back at her documentation of young people dancing, shouting in one another’s ears, and just hanging out at New York City nightclubs and raves throughout the nineties. Come for the wonderful, never before/rarely seen pictures at legendary parties like Konkrete Jungle, Giant Step, Basement Bhangra, and Maskarave, stay for Alice’s stories about the work of being a nightlife photographer for Paper magazine in a time before we all walked around with cameras in our pockets, before we learned how to pose, before it was a cinch to hail a cab in some strange part of town. Issue 5 tells the story of Francisco Pardorla, a part of the Filipino American mobile DJ scene that thrived throughout the Bay Area in the 1980s and 1990s. When he was 14, Francisco found himself at a college party, mesmerized by the DJ crew rocking the crowd. They were Filipino, just like him, and it made him feel like this was something he could do, too. He and his friends began throwing their own parties, with gear and lighting borrowed from home or pilfered from construction sites, playing house parties, school dances, and church functions. Within a few years, he was promoting some of the biggest parties in the Bay Area. A collab with @soulsides to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his great history of this scene, Legions of Boom (CONT’D)
