☀️🎷 Bay Area royalty all afternoon long. Howard Wiley lit up the Gardens with blazing saxophone and a surprise appearance from Silk E “The People’s Champ” performing “Give Her What I Get.” Silk E’s powerhouse vocals and split had the crowd on their feet on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. One standout moment from a season that’s just getting started.

We’re sad to announce the cancellation of Hailu Mergia’s performance on May 16 due to unforeseen circumstances, but we’re very happy to share that the show will go on with an outstanding double bill of Bay Area talent featuring jazz great Howard Wiley and R&B phenom PHER.
Oakland saxophonist Howard Wiley brings soul-steeped jazz connected to its social music roots and leads a band of the Bay Area’s toughest players.
Also hailing from Oakland, jazz and classic soul music vocalist PHER brings his newly released album “Songs by PHER” to life in a performance rooted in intimacy and improvisation.
Pre-show music from KALW DJ Charlotte K starts at 1pm. See you there!

A couple years ago, I had this idea for a series: interviews with older adults on bicycles, ridden by younger people... an intergenerational conversation in motion. It was inspired by the incredible organization @CyclingWithoutAge , founded by @OleKassow , which gives rides to older adults and reconnects them to the flow of daily life.
Like a lot of ideas that feel clear in your head, it turned out to be much harder to execute. The project was tough on everyone, from a production standpoint, and we didn’t get to make more of them.
But I come back to a piece like this one with Janey, who was 91 when we filmed, and I feel really proud of what we pulled off.
Janey came to San Francisco during the Great Migration. She fell in love with jazz and spent much of her early life in Golden Gate Park. For this piece, we brought her back and arranged a surprise jazz serenade, by the one and only @howard.wiley , thanks to the creative brains behind the org Artists & Elders.
When I first met her that day, Janey seemed mildy (and understandably) skeptical of me and my intentions. But after the serenade, she turned to me with a huge smile and said, “You pulled one on me.”
I can still see the look on her face and remember how lucky I felt to be in that moment.

@howard.wiley and I have been close friends and brothers since we met in high school during our senior year for the national Grammy In The Schools Jazz Ensemble in Los Angeles, CA‼️ We have performed together, recorded together, toured together, supported each other and more. Friends. I’d like to invite you to a new series I helped co-create entitled, The Hang at @sanjosejazz ’s -> @sjzbreakroom in Downtown San Jose.
SJZ’s newest program explores the music of exciting artists and the music that inspires them. This inaugural edition, of “The Hang,” features one of the Bay’s first-call saxophonists, Jazz Aid Fund artist @howard.wiley .
Centered on an 8pm performance by Howard’s Hammond B-3 Trio, the evening begins at 7pm with a cool listening session featuring deep cuts on vinyl picked out by Howard earlier in the day, just for you from @needletothegrooverecords .
After the performance, you can bounce—or stick around, grab another drink and hang for a discussion with the band.
The Hang. It’s part sophisticated listening session, part vinyl night, part live jazz performance, part discussion and Q&A... and all hang.

Besides a live performance by Howard Wiley and his Hammond B-3 trio, one of the innovative parts of this Saturday's "The Hang" is a doors-to-downbeat listening session of vinyl selected by Howard earlier in the day with our partner, Needle to the Groove. It's a way for us to get into Howard's head--what has influenced him in the past and what he is listening to now. Howard is no stranger to the art of crate-digging: "I have about 10,000 records," he says. Get a primer on Howard's collecting from this classic piece from KQED Arts, and get tickets to the event the San Jose Jazz website. Article link in bio.
