Can you solve the AR maze at FROST this weekend? Until Feb. 22, you can experience five students’ augmented reality (AR) projects at FROST’s downtown hub, including Avery LeClaire’s aMAZEing. Inspired by fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons, aMAZEing is a 50x50-foot AR maze created by Avery LeClaire. Try to find your way out of the 11-foot-tall brick walls, but beware of what lurks inside. Treasure awaits those brave enough to enter the maze and successfully navigate it!  Avery LeClaire is a 4th-year Creative Technologies student at the University of Regina. Avery’s work focuses on graphic design, game design, audio production and audio engineering. Avery draws inspiration from themes of fantasy and science fiction, and enjoys telling stories through digital media.  To experience this project, download the free app Hoverlay and head to Victoria Park during FROST, Feb. 13-16 & 20-22. Bring headphones/earbuds! #augmentedreality #yqr #argame #digitalmedia

@goldenglobes , but make it AR! Since our team was stationed behind the scenes for most of the night, I built a @hoverlayar AR experience so we could still get the photo op — complete with the golden globe statue and host @nikkiglaser . The CSUN Cinema and Television Arts intern team: @ezrabalcha , @robert.jonesprd , Eliya Brennan, @izzy.wants.fries , and me. We also had the pleasure of working with @loislane79 and Melissa Myers. The intern team helped curate photo selections for the site under @gabrielleboehme , who had final say. Some of these are from walkthrough day, some from show day — scan the last slide to try the AR yourself! If you don’t have the Hoverlay app on your phone it will first prompt you to download it and then you can come back and screenshot the QR code to open it in Hoverlay from there (or scan it off of someone else’s phone). The AR is scalable and moveable so you can adjust it in the app and take a photo with it in the app as well. If you do it, post it and tag me so I can see it!

We’re pleased to present “The Founder’s Pillars” at MIT’s Artfinity Festival, on view until May 2. The Founder’s Pillars is an augmented reality memorial that reimagines the six neoclassical columns at MIT’s iconic Building 10. The building prominently bears the name of William Barton Rogers—founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—yet also carries a less visible history: Rogers once enslaved six individuals in his household Virgina. Drawing on six African regions, each reflected in a distinct textile and myth, the project merges classical architecture with African artistry to weave decolonial perspectives and narratives of freedom-making into six richly layered textile films. By activating these pillars, The Founder’s Pillars becomes a living tribute to the African diaspora’s ancestral roots and an acknowledgment of the Institute’s links to slavery. About the Artists • Meghna Singh & Simon Wood: Cape Town-based artists who explore colonial and capitalist legacies through decolonial approaches across XR, video, and public art. • Lesiba Mabitsela @afri_digital A South African interdisciplinary artist and fashion practitioner, founding member of the African Fashion Research Institute. To fully experience “The Founder’s Pillars,” please download the Hoverlay App for iOS or Android. @hoverlayar Created with the @opendoclab MIT Open Documentary Lab’s AR and Public Space Artist Collective, this project is part of a multiyear inquiry into how digital augmentation reshapes our spatial perceptions, our understanding of place, and our collective histories.
