We in the SF Bay Area have always stood at the forefront of LGBTQ liberation. Our community has never waited for progress to be handed to us — we built it together. Today, your Legacy at Horizons can be the next chapter in this history. Create Your Legacy at the link in our bio!

We at Horizons envision a world where all LGBTQ people live freely and fully. This week’s Supreme Court ruling in Chiles v. Salazar will not deter our work towards making that vision a reality. The ruling is, however, a severe setback that we fear will result in profound harm to young LGBTQ people across the U.S. and make it much more difficult for many to live as their authentic selves. Conversion therapy and other efforts to “cure” LGBTQ people inflict “severe pain and suffering” and are “cruel, inhuman, and degrading,” according to the United Nation’s Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity. Just this year, research by The Trevor Project found that tragically high rates of LGBTQ youth who were recently exposed to conversion therapy reported considering suicide in the past year, with 35 percent having attempted it. Horizons-funded research in partnership with the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism in 2023 found that there was already a significant lack of authoritative resources to combat messaging about conversion therapy on online platforms, resulting in the spread of harmful misinformation. As LGBTQ people, especially our trans and nonbinary communities, are increasingly scapegoated and targeted in today’s political environment, our LGBTQ youth deserve better protections against disregarded and unsafe so-called “healthcare” practices.

"As queer people navigate a world that increasingly feels less safe than it did just a few years ago, I’ve also seen truly meaningful progress made for the LBTQ community in Northern California over the last two years.
I’ve seen justice system-impacted youth build their feelings of safety, belonging, and confidence after participating in queer and trans-affirming programming. I’ve seen Translatinas share their personal experiences through storytelling to encourage their peers to engage in the community rather than hide in fear. I’ve seen LGBTQ elders come out of isolation and connect with each other through peer support and tailored case management. I’ve seen a lot more urgent needs actually met thanks to a crucial partnership between Horizons Foundation, the California LGBTQ Health Equity Initiative, and our local grantee partners. This is what can happen when you move beyond good intentions and leverage systems that truly work for people."

We are aware of the recent tragic shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis that resulted in the death of Renee Nicole Good, 37. We recognize that the circulation of videos and images related to this incident, combined with incendiary language from the current administration, has intensified grief, concern, and distress for many people across the country.
We understand that protests are planned in response to this incident. Peaceful protest is a core First Amendment right, and we support the ability of individuals to express their views safely, legally, and without fear.
Our work is grounded in supporting human rights, democratic values, and community well-being. We remain committed to the protection of constitutional rights and to actions that contribute to safety and constructive engagement.

Today, Horizons Foundation honors #TDoR, a day to remember, mourn, and uplift the trans lives who blazed the trail for our community, especially those we've lost to anti-trans violence and transphobia. Horizons' vision of a world where all LGBTQ people live freely and fully cannot be realized without centering the trans folks of yesterday and today who continue to fight with us for LGBTQ justice and liberation. View and support the Bay Area organizations servicing trans folks and trans people of color in our free LGBTQ Organization Directory at the link in our bio.
