2 microphones, no waiting! Dubbing is like flying a fighter jet after a 5 minute orientation, without knowing how far you have to go and with the understanding that ground control has your back. You walk into the booth cold , with no idea how many roles you'll be doing. The director gives you a quick rundown of the plot and who the person is. And then it's go time ! I just got out of a 2 hour session with the incomparable @fabiolastevensonvo running ground control (ie, directing). 4 different roles (which means 4 distinctly different "normal" speaking voices) plus "walla" (background noise for different scenes). I don't have the words to describe how much fun this is. Thank you to Fabiola and to @sebastianzancanaro for bringing me in (and huge shout out to the amazing engineers at @blu.digitalgroup #dubbing #dubbingartist #voiceover #voiceactor

Tech/nerd alert: Driving shots...aka "The kiss of death" for the still photographer. Luckily these days there isn't as much process trailer work (A tow rig where a car is towed in real streets with lights and cameras attached to the whole thing). A lot of car work is done now on stage either in front of a green screen or, more recently, in front of an LED wall (aka Volume wall). But even being in a controlled environment, there just often isn't room the still photographer go sneak a camera in there. So what did I do to get the 3rd photo on "Thunderforce" (a fun action comedy, btw)? I went across the stage, cranked the ISO on my Sony A92 up to 12,800, and zoomed the 200-600mm zoom all the way in to 600mm and got the shot. Yes, that's a handheld 600mm shot at F/6.3 at 1/80 of a second (Thank you image stabilization). #bts #unitstills #sonyprosupport #sonyalpha #unitstillphotographer #movie #actioncomedy #sonya92 #200-600 🎥: @barrypetersondp 📸: @hopper_stone

Happy birthday to @samheughan . I worked with him on @spywhodumpedme movie in 2017. It was one of those things where I wasn't familiar with Outlander and didn't know who he was. And you never would have known from his attitude and professionalism and general all around friendly demeanor that he was this massive star. He was just that lovely Scottish guy with whom I bonded over our mutual life of whiskey and gin. Had an amazing time shooting in Budapest, Vienna, Amsterdam and Berlin. Thank you to @susannafogel for having me along on this great ride. #samheughan #unitstills #sonyprosupport #sonyalpha #movie @smpspstills 📽️: @barrypetersondp 📸: @hopper_stone

The world is what it is right now and last Saturday I needed to unplug a little. So I grabbed my Sony Rx1rmkiii and headed over to Santa Monica and walked along the beach for a few hours, eventually making my way into Venice. I like the discipline of 1 camera, 1 lens. The Rx1rmkiii has a great f/2.0 35mm and since the sensor is pretty high res (60mp or something like that?), it has a button which will crop in in-camera to 50 and 70mm from the fixed 35mm. So it's kind of like having 3 lenses in one. It also has a pretty good macro function for getting in close. It's a pretty sweet knock around camera for just taking walks and shooting what's out there. Thanks to @kishsawh_ for introducing me to this beauty. I'm thinking about doing more "1 camera, 1 lens" series. Any thoughts or requests for locations or what lens? The 50-150 is already next up. #sonyalpha #sonyrx1riii #streetphotography #santamonica #sonyprosupport

Sometimes there is a moment you want to be able to create with all of your actors. It's a whole thing to get them all together: You have to ask the 1st AD if it's OK. They they have to check with the actors. You need to check with grip and electric if it's OK or if you need to tweak some lighting or move some gear. You, as the photographer, need to have your frame figured out; because once you get the actors to their marks, you've got 30 seconds tops (usually less) to get the shot. On @instantfamily , I saw an opportunity when we had all of our actors portraying the family, and the dog (shoutout to Meatball) on set in the right wardrobe at the same time. So I went through all of the steps and had it all set up. But how do I make sure that the lighting is right for a group? That's where the stand-ins come in (aka "2nd team"). You don't know a good stand in until you've worked with a bad one. They are very much the unsung heroes of the set. Without them, lighting and figuring out camera movies would take so much longer and lead to more mistakes during filming because. Actors need to be "in it" for the performance and not stand around while we tweak stuff (which is also why we don't ask for photo set ups very often). So, here's 2nd team from "Instant Family" (featured first in this post)...and you can swipe to see the final shot. #instantfamily #smpsp #sonyprosupport #unitstills #sonyalpha #livethemoment #unitstillphotographer #movie #standins #actors 🎥:@brettsbo 📸: @hopper_stone

3 years ago, I was in Thailand working on @sympathizerhbo . We were out in the middle of nowhere in a quarry where our art department had built an incredible set of a re-education camp. One of the scenes we shot that day was what we lovingly called "Bon in the box" or "Fred in the box" (Bon is the character name played by the ever intrepid @frednguyenkhan . And when I say "in a box"...I mean literally in a box. I had to kneel and stick my trusty A9ii in the midst of everything. Tight...cramped...indescribably hot and more humid than summers in Rangoon...Fred never complained and gave his all in eerie scene of facing one's demons. The Sympathizer is in my top 5 jobs of my entire career. Thank you to @craigcalefate and the folks at HBO/Max for trusting me with this one. #unitstills #unitstillphotographer @sonyalpha #sonyprosupport #smpsp @smpspstills #thailand #thesympathizer #vietnam #thailand #spythriller 🎥: Ji-Yong Kim 📸: @hopper_stone

These 3 guys and this one eternal city have a birthday today. HBD to @iggypopofficial (whom I had the pleasure of photographing for a docu series about punk rock). Iggy was super cool and one of the most well spoken people (never mind musicians) I have ever met. Bright, insightful and wonderfully irreverent. Same goes out to @robriggle with whom I got to work on "Dumb and Dumber Too". When I was looking for photos to post for this, I was reminded how much we kind of beat the crap out of of Rob in all of the antics. And yes, here he is camouflaged as a vending machine. The 3rd is a headshot from a few years ago taken by the solid @filmstring (I needed headshots because...you know...I'm apparently an actor now too). And I was today years old when I learned that Rome has a birthday. (4/21/752 BC). I hope to age as gracefully as Rome. (Not pictured here also born on this day: Queen Elizabeth II, Charles Grodin, Andie McDowell, Tony Danza). #happybirthday

I'm not going to share what I looked like in the 90s, because I don't want to help Meta train their AI face recognition technology. But here's a selection of what I was doing in the 90s. Before I sold my soul to Hollywood...ahem, excuse me...started working as a unit still photographer, I was a photojournalist. Besides running around the world getting into trouble, I also shot my fair share of music. I've seen the 1st 3 songs of a LOT of bands. Here are a few of my favorites (and horizontals because they fit better on IG). 1) Robert Plant at Rock Am Ring in Germany. The photographers were all on a catwalk that was flush with the stage, so we had to kneel in front of the band so as to not block them. During the guitar solo, Robert Plant walked over to the group of 5 or 6 of us and squatted down to our level and gave each of us a few seconds. The journalist I was working with @ruokanenr told me that he's never seen a group of photographers leave a place with such large grins. 2) Judas Priest. Jäähalli, Helsinki. 1991 (I want to say?). 3) Sting. Jäähalli, Helsinki. Probably also around 1990. Fun fact: I bumped into him in the men's room in the waiting area. I was kind of shocked that the band didn't have their own facilities. 4) Suzanne Vega. Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki. 1990 5) Lenningrad Cowboys and The Red Army Choir. Senaatintori, Helsinki. 1994. It's pretty much impossible to explain The Leningrad Cowboys. But look them up. And yes, they played an outdoor concert in the center of Helsinki with the actual Red Army Choir (as in the choir of the Russian Army). Keep in mind that the USSR had only recently broken up and Finland has a turbulent history with that area of the world. Seeing this was just insane. 6) Midnight Oil. Ruisrock. Turku, Finland. 1990 7) Slowdive. Tavastia Klubi. Helsinki. 1992. #concertphotography #film #photojournalism #midnightoil #sting #suzannevega #slowdive #judaspriest #leningradcowboys
