for the ‘uyagula’ video, we stepped out of the studio and into a graveyard! 🪦🪦🪦🪦
the brixton cemetery called to me and upon researching, i learned abt its significance. i read that the graves were segregated according to race. which i guess isn’t new. i remember visiting the plumstead cemetery a decade ago (😭) for my first year anthro course called ‘words, deeds, bones & things’ and being very intrigued by how black names only showed up in the graveyard after 1994.
at the brixton cemetery, we looked and looked for the black section — through the white children’s section, rand lords, angel sculptures and the hindu crematorium that was initiated by mahatma gandhi — and eventually we gave up bcs it was getting dark and we have rules!!
then as we were getting out,
@hoodpixels said, this is the black section. i asked how he knew, he said don’t you see how the graves are packed on top of each other? that section was fenced off. with barbed wire, i think…
‘uyagula’ mv out now. check it out on youtube. link in bio. check out my EP, king of the underworld, if you haven’t yet.
it’s been a pleasure making these videos and covers w you,
@hoodpixels 🌹
@nene_hulella came through to bring amazing style to the project — sourcing incredible pieces from
@_jodorry to elevate this art. thank you to you both! 🌻
thank you for just getting it, and your generosity,
@nene_hulella 🥺 incidentally, today marks four years of me being a sangoma! 🪦🪦🙏🏿 i “wrote” uyagula in that subversive sense… the phrase “myeke uyagula” is often used to dismiss those seen as mad…but i have learned from my life that we just need to be left to our awakenings. 💞
i think i am done throwing my funeral for the 20s now. ready to liiiive. 🪐
makhosi. bye bye 💞
