Music and dance were once the same thing.
How can we use digital instruments to turn dancers into musicians and musicians into dancers?
Last week, Liliana Salazar and I made an improvised performance for the Unity Consciousness festival at Vancouver’s @roundhousecc
Movement data from four @movesenseofficial sensors connected to miRack through @holonic.systems Holonist app, which allowed Liliana to use gestures and postures to voice physically modelled SWAM trumpets, running as AUv3 plugins inside miRack. SWAM’s tenor trombone was played on an augmented Roland Aerophone Mini, connected to an iConnectivity A4+ interface with a WIDI Bud BLE MIDI adapter.
Some of the numerous mappings include interactions like activating and controlling @eventideaudio ’s Qvox plugin by the angle of the wind instrument. Timbral parameters such as growl, flutter, pitch bend and vibrato were mapped to postures and movement. Some structural parameters were also mapped. For example, a walking SWAM double bass was triggered by leg movement and tempo was controlled by shared average activity of all sensors, clocked with Ableton Link. This compact setup ran off an iPad Mini 7.

Mark your Canada Day with the last performance program of @unitycoarts
Performance Program 3: continuum
July 1, 2:00-3:30pm
(+ interactive technology activation at 1:30pm)
On the final day of the festival — which happens to fall on Canada Day — we are honoured to share a powerful Indigenous-led program. It opens with Sophie Dow & Mohammed Rashead, a ritualistic dance duet exploring the Ether. Following that, our long time friend/spiritual family Starr Muranko (Co-Artistic Director of Raven Spirit Dance) will share a heartfelt drumming and singing alongside her young child, Sami Qhapac Alvarez, a precious intergenerational and intercultural collaboration.
The finale features two acclaimed Indigenous musicians: RITUAL PURIFICATION (a highly respected ritual noise artist) and Kuliktana (from the renowned Inuit throat singing group PIQSIQ), performing together for the first time. Though each artist holds an esteemed practice of their own, this marks their first-ever public collaboration. Expect ethereal vocals, cascading drones and immersive waves of crackling noise gathered into a cathedral of enthralling, textural sound.
Sharing this work on Canada Day is a bold and heartfelt act of reclaiming space, re-centering Indigenous voices, and celebrating true relationship and collaboration.
Before the Continuum program begins, we encourage you to arrive early to enjoy the final day of the exhibition and catch a special interactive technology activation by Ove Holmqvist & Liliana Salazar at 1:30pm. Ove, a Finnish musician & technologist, works with advanced generative music and motion-tracking sensors. In this activation, his partner Liliana — who works in the healthcare sector — will join him to activate their generative music through movement. This is a great opportunity to experience interactive technology up close.
At the end of the program, there will be a little secret surprise to bring a beautiful closure of the festival. We are excited for you to experience this in person.

Vancouver is the birthplace of soundwalks, conceptualised by members of the World Soundscape Project (Hildegard Westerkamp, R.Murray Schaeffer, Barry Truax and others) in the 1970s.
Last summer, I conducted two experiments that can be thought of as soundwalks, although (apologies to purists) the non-interventionism has become very much intervention due to a portable PA. Furthermore, the experience is not so much that of a soundscape but an interactive, generative score that adapts to the geospatial environment of the listeners. This is still a communal listening experience, however, and one that requires observation of the surrounding space and place. Principles of acoustic ecology are still guiding the pre-composition of the adaptive score, but through the seeming magic of spatial computing, the walk becomes an exploration of public place, land ownership and land use. It is also a statement very much aligned with Situationist concepts like derivé, detournement, psychogeography.
For this interactive soundwalk in Vancouver’s Olympic Village, members of the Future Proof Creatives meetup took turns in holding an ordinary smartphone running the free Holon app, which sonified (ok musified) their movement and location data. Follow us for the next sonic intervention! Holon, our free iOS app that generates synth music from movement and geospatial data, is updated.
Road networks, railways, tunnels, bridges, stairs, rivers, canals, paths, trails, cable cars, zip lines, ski lifts, piers and ferry routes are now part of the Holonic system of ubiquitous musical geospatial computing.
They contribute to Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) according to their inferred function and weight.
Holon reacts to land use musically by adjusting the intensity of the music according to the human activity level associated with each land use category.
Points Of Interest can now also contribute to land use percentages. Our geospatial dataset lets users interact musically by using their proximity to POIs.
Amenities, landmarks, street furniture, bars and cafés become sonic emitters and modulators, as do objects related to urban mobility, such as traffic lights, bus stops, toll booths, car washes and so on.
Holon currently works in 1000 regions around the world and our update just extended coverage of our spatial computing features further.
The latest version of Holon has been updated with support for Apple Watch, which enables biofeedback. You can now sync the music with your heart rate and pulse sonification works on every preset.
Included are 10 new presets, which are really modular synth patches powered by miRack (exclusively licensed from mifki).
Custom patches such as these, with interactions embedded in locations, can be made with miRack and our editor, Holonist. They can then be shared to any user that has the free Holon app.
Holon supports Apple AirPods 3/Pro/Max for head controlled modulation and effects.
Holon is a free demo of the Holonic B2B platform for musical mobility, available now for iOS from Apple’s AppStore
