Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! It’s the settler-colonizers’ job to clean up our shit! Here’s a sneak peek of our upcoming film BACK UP. Scene title: Columbus/Monument Takedown. Dancers : Hiponymous Filmography and editing: @leilawa.aa 2nd Camera @thomados Score: @rendoublee87 Prop assistant: @nawaawadallah Costumes: @stephie_molstad Composer note: As a Sicilian-American it was especially poignant and righteous to be a small part of the indigenous-led Columbus takedown at the Capitol here in Mni Sota Makoce just last year. In this post-apocalyptic setting of the BACK UP world, Covid 2700 perhaps, the earth is luscious and experiencing a revival due to the necessary extrication of the people. They live in dark bunkers in space and portal back in order to finish the cleanup work and recover right relationship and connection once more. The work is buoyed by the drum sounds of my Sicilian ancestors. The “tamburello” is an ancient pre-Christian, ritual drum developed on the island of Sicily that honors the mixed identity of Arab, Turkish, Greek and North African presences and contributions to the culture. Also the drum of the cuntadinu (peasants/land workers). This piece is a contra Colombo statement and joyful offering to fellow paisans to honor and venerate real resistors, rebels, organizers and heros from our legacies and join the movements to dethrone genocidal maniacs like Columbus. May this film prediction never come to be. May the earth remain inhabitable. May that come from deep listening and repair with indigenous peoples and their wisdoms. We have come to the forced end of a lease with our favorite community and dance rehearsal space. It’s surreal. Much of it seems unfair. Yet we are filled with gratitude for what has been and all the memories and love that lives on because of what all the artists poured into this “Thirdspace”. It was very amazing while it lasted. Our parting gift to ourselves that will in fact be shared with all of you is a new experimental dance film shot in this scribbly room we will no longer access starting tomorrow. Stay tuned for the release later this year from filmmaker @leilawa.aa and dancers @evzdropper and @rendoublee87 and music also from Renée funded by MSAB Artist Initiative grant.
