A look back at Hingham during America’s Bicentennial when the parade marched in the opposite direction than it does today (… and to make it more confusing, one of these images- the ladies in bonnets passing 103-105 North St.- is flipped 😉).
But that’s history for you, full of perspective, surprises, and stories worth revisiting. We commemorate not just to remember, but to inspire. To remind the next generation to keep history alive, to commemorate with purpose, and to carry forward the shared values that define us as Americans.
Three of the young people pictured in this carousel of images were so inspired in 1976 that they’re still serving the Hingham Historical Society nearly fifty years later. Any guesses who? 👀

Why is the intersection at Lincoln & North St. in downtown Hingham called Fountain Square? Before the Abraham Lincoln statue was dedicated in 1939 and the Benjamin Lincoln plaque in 1930, there was a fountain. The fountain replaced an earlier town water pump. What else do you see in these historic photos?
Step inside history at the Old Ordinary. Open today 10AM- 4PM Book your tour online or stop by 21 Lincoln St. From the kitchen to the parlor, centuries of collected and preserved treasures await you. Treat yourself!

We’ve been honored to partner with the Town of Hingham on a Shared Streets and Spaces grant from MassDOT to improve safety for all who pass through Fountain Square in downtown Hingham.
This important work includes the reconfiguration of the North and Lincoln Street intersection and the addition of new crosswalks along Lincoln Street making it safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
New North Parish and our immediate neighbors have been strong and supportive partners and as we move forward, we’ll need additional community support to thoughtfully connect the Benjamin Lincoln House driveways to the newly reimagined space. This final phase is an estimated $75,000 investment for the Society. Please consider making a gift today to help us create a safer, more welcoming downtown for all.
With gratitude to the Town of Hingham for prioritizing public safety and partnering with us to highlight Hingham’s historic assets. What a great 250th legacy: bringing “Abe and Ben” and the stories of their families together in a powerful and lasting way.
Kick off Hingham’s 250th summer in style at Red, White & Bubbly. Join us in the heart of downtown for cocktails, a beautiful seated dinner catered by Kate’s Table, lively entertainment, and a spirited live auction. Tomorrow at the Plymouth Spire in Plymouth, MA. Historian Paula Bagger talks about Hingham’s Black American Revolutionary War Patriots including Squire Cushing.
Paula’s remarks are part of the South Shore History Symposium sponsored by Backroads of the South Shore- a consortium of Historical Societies and sites south of Boston. Paula’s year of research expand our understanding of the Revolutionary South Shore.
Walk-ins welcome. Registration starts at 8:30AM. Tickets $20pp.
A big THANK YOU to the Town of Hingham for the safety improvements at Fountain Square—the intersection of Lincoln and North Street by the island with the Abraham Lincoln statue.
Made possible through a grant from MassDOT for shared streets and spaces, these upgrades are already enhancing pedestrian safety with a new crosswalk across Lincoln Street.
What a thrill to watch Hingham fifth graders safely move between the Old Ordinary and the Benjamin Lincoln House today during their annual Colonial Hingham field trip. In a few short months, everyone will be able to safely get a closer view of the beautiful statue of our 16th President placed there in 1939. What an exciting improvement as we commemorate Americas 250th.
We are grateful for this community investment and look forward to working with the Town as the project continues this Spring.
