Hillier is proud to partner with the Colgrave Seabrook Foundation and supported by the RHS Bursaries Committee, on an initiative offering two horticultural students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across our nurseries.
Congratulations to Zoe H and Lexie B, who will each undertake a two-week placement with our nursery teams, developing valuable skills in commercial tree and container plant production.
This is an invaluable opportunity to spend time at:
🌳Andlers Ash Tree Nursery - where more than 250,000 semi-mature trees across 150 species are cultivated and
🌱Brentry Container Nursery - which produces up to one million ornamental plants annually, including shrubs, perennials and ornamental trees
🌿Broadmead Nursery - where approximately 50,000 container-grown trees across 150 species are produced each year
From propagation and crop husbandry to biosecurity, pruning and large-scale nursery logistics, the bursary offers practical experience in the workplace designed to support these early-career professionals.
Here's what Adam Dunnett, Production Director at Hillier Nurseries and Trustee of the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation, had to say:
“It is hugely encouraging to see so many enthusiastic and passionate young horticulturists entering the industry. At Hillier, we are very pleased to be working with the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation to support the next generation of horticultural professionals and help them develop their careers within the industry.”
This year, we’re proud to be involved behind the scenes at the #rhschelseaflowershow, supplying trees to a number of gardens, including @parkinsonsuk A Garden for Every Parkinson’s Journey, designed by @aritanderson . This considered design explores the experience of living with Parkinson’s through a series of carefully structured spaces.
In the lead up to the build, we welcomed Arit and the team at @lalandscapes to our nursery, where we mapped out the garden’s dimensions on site. This gave the team the opportunity to walk the layout and visualise how the planting a structure would come together.
We visited the show build yesterday to check on our tree deliveries, and it’s exciting to see the gardens progressing well. We look forward to returning over the coming weeks to see how they progress!

A tree in a tree; we always turn to the very best growers for our stock, in this case 5 years ago planting this multistemmed Tibetan cherry or Prunus serrula from @hilliertrees chosen with help by the ever helpful @jameshilliertrees
As if showing off the fabulous bark is not enough, she frames one of four lollipop hornbeams beyond from @deepdaletrees
Planted by in house designer @sophie_gardendesignco.co.uk it’s crucial that our designers know the practicalities of tree planting including underground guying with @platipusanchors so that ugly tree stakes are avoided and the trees stay firmly in the ground as the trees roots grow out
5 years on and the clients delighted #trees #treesofinstagram #prunusserrula #hornbeam #topiarytrees

Recently, the Horticultural Trades Association asked us to talk about how the weather is affecting our business, as part of its work highlighting the pressures many horticultural businesses are facing and the need for stronger government support around water resilience. 🌧️
If you missed it, you can listen to the interview (link in bio - (time: 1:09:40)).
The prolonged wet weather is certainly being felt across nurseries nationwide, and whilst planting may be slower, we’re still continuing to lift trees of all sizes as conditions allow.
If your project timeline has been delayed, our contract pot service can help. We’ll lift your selected trees, pot them on, and care for them here at the nursery until you’re ready for delivery.
Contact our team today to find out more 🌳
