We’ve mentioned before that our process will focus on exploration and curiosity more than polish and performance. In fact, we’ve adjusted our marketing copy multiple times to avoid calling this a production.
The idea for this project emerged from the idea of the “quick raise” process – it’s efficient with resources, it’s easier to get a group together, it has an innate spontaneity that many of us actors are constantly seeking, and it may well offer an echo of Elizabethan theatrical practice. And the tools, tricks, and techniques utilizered a profoundly resonant with projects on any timeline.
Another resource-efficient theatrical form is the good ol’ staged reading. You might know how staged readings usually go: music stands, unwieldy plastic binders containing the script, both covering up most of the actor’s body and face. They tend towards the unprepared side of spontaneity, rather than an innate vitality. They are rarely compelling.
But what if they could be?
What would happen if we bring a little more embodiment, intention, and ensemble to this lightweight theatrical structure? We have a theory that these quick raise tools might help a staged reading transcend its own form and become something far more interesting, and far more human.
The week of our project, we’ll have two read-throughs of the script, just to get the text and each others’ voices into our heads. Then, we’ll spend all Saturday in the studio, playing with movement and language, finding some rough structure to help you follow this story, and quickly raising our sense of ensemble. Our hope is that by the time we open the doors that evening, we’ll be ready to invite you into a newly (and quickly) woven web of interconnectivity, curiosity, and exploration.
At most, we’ll learn something new about what it means to be human. At medium, we’ll learn something new about making theatre. At least, we’ll spend some time with beautiful people and beautiful text.
Tickets available now.

We’ve met our goal for higher artist stipends!!! We’ve even surpassed that goal enough to cover our fees.
Anything else coming in, both here and through ticketing, will of course cover other production costs, and remaining funds will provide a foundation for future projects from both Cadent Shakes and Junkyard.

It is a sparkling twist of fate when any group of actors manages to get in one room, at the same time, with a shared purpose. We find this particular group of actors to be particularly sparkly. Coming in from both Western Mass and New York City, with roots even further afield, they also bring a wide range of expertise and experience, including somatics, clown work, directing, teaching, devising, and more. Not to mention they’re just a sweet group of human beings.
We believe all work in the arts should be financially sustainable for the people making that work, and we need your help to make that happen. For this production, we are fundraising towards a $150 stipend for each of our nine actors and have just $236 left to reach our goal. We hope you’ll help us get there, and we hope you’ll join this sparkly fate by gathering with us on March 28.

Spend an evening with King Lear, a sprawling portrait of family, loyalty, leadership, and failure.
Known for its so-called redemption arc, we’ll be investigating the grey areas of accountability and the relationship between gender and patriarchy, asking whether any individual is free from systemic oppression – even when that very system bestows power upon them.
Heavy stuff, we know.
But there is redemption in this play: like any of Shakespeare’s works, there are bright glowing moments of humor and heart (not to mention soaring passages of poetry) that help us face the horrors while carving out space, tooth and nail, for humanity. We may even find our own salvation simply by engaging in the curiosity and imagination of storytelling.
Our process will likewise focus on exploration and curiosity more than polish and performance. This cast, made up of both local and NYC-based actors, will spend the day building ensemble, analyzing text, and finding a structure for this piece, until we open the doors to you, our audience, and the most important part of any theatrical venture.
Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing more about the cast, the process, and the co-production.
Until then, with affection and gratitude,
Sarah Corbyn Woolf of Cadent Shakespeare Co.
