STREETVIEW: RICHARD FORBES-HAMILTON
Our new Streetview series presents short pop-up showcases of work by artists from our community. Displayed in the gallery windows at Persistence Works, these concise and impactful selections of work are available to view 24 hours a day.
Our featured artist for the February showcase is Richard Forbes-Hamilton (@highestlearning ).
Richard is an interdisciplinary artist based at Exchange Place. He works across paint, experimental animation, sound, photography and textiles. Frequently, his work focuses on a single idea or motif, which is then repeatedly explored by reapproaching the same subject matter with different materials.
The two paintings on display reference the stories, history, myths, and legends connected to Sheffield’s rivers. They come from the artist’s direct experience of these places and observational drawings.

Shimmer (Don)

The Shimmer series takes inspiration from bodies of water that flow through or delineate edges of specific places.
The two paintings on view at @yartspace Persistence Works are part of a subseries referencing rivers found in Sheffield. This one draws from the River Don as it passes through Lady's Bridge at the historic centre of Sheffield.

Shimmer (Moss - Never Fear)

Currently on view at @yartspace Persistence Works
Legend has it in the late 18th century a group of sickle-makers (from Ridgeway) were walking home beside a dam on the River Moss late at night. They claimed to see a ghostly apparition walking toward them. When it passed, the figure greeted them with the words “Never fear” before vanishing into the darkness.
Although part of a recent series, this painting feels connected to a period of work I was making maybe 20 years ago when I began studying at @brighton_uni_painting . Trying to navigate painting figures and how they might be culturally/historically placed or presented, I started to imagine how objects or places could be translated into images of people.

So excited to be part of this show opening tomorrow (August 16th) 2-6pm at @asylumstudiosuk
This show brings together works of heads, faces, and portraits. These are heads bitten into by a desire to lay down blocks of colour, the proximity of zones of colour next to other zones, brushing, wiping, smearing, thinning. These actions dismantle, distort and dissolve the structure of the head, pushing it through a process. It is now a ‘headitie’, to borrow Maria Lassnig’s term to explain what is left after stripping away of features of a face and thinking of a head as a set of formal units of sensation, leaving us with ‘’cheek-shields, brow-shields and neck cylinders’’.
