✨ Introducing Femme Forward Collective ✨ Femme Forward was born from our Her Spin On Things community. While Her Spin is a space to share, learn and talk about music in a supportive environment, some of our members wanted to take that passion further, to step behind the decks and play out. That’s how Femme Forward Collective came to life 💫 This collective is focused on vinyl and exists to give women and women-identified music lovers the chance to share their sound publicly, to grow as selectors, and to take up space in the music scene. We’re a multicultural group of femmes, each with our own unique sound, connected through our love for records and community. The Amazon jungle created a music scene so isolated that even Lima, less than 100 miles away, had no idea it existed. This record is proof. In the 1970s and 80s, deep in the Peruvian Amazon, in cities only reachable by boat or plane, a generation of young musicians were picking up cumbia rhythms from Colombia through radios and mixing them with the sounds of the jungle and surf rock from California. Something completely new was born. Amazonian cumbia. Two local labels: Discos Universal and Discos Volcán, pressed this music for communities the rest of Peru ignored. No industry. No support. They sold their records at markets and on local radio. Pure survival. This compilation was rescued by Samy Ben Redjeb. He founded Analog Africa in 2006 with one mission, to take music from total obscurity to a global audience. For Perú Selvático he dug through two forgotten jungle vaults to bring us 18 tracks never heard outside the Amazon. As he says himself, the future of music happened decades ago.
