The Resplendent Beauty of Meesapulimala -
Deep in the misty highlands of Meesapulimala, Munnar, I came across one of nature’s most stunning gems — the Resplendent Shrub Frog (Raorchestes resplendens). Endemic to the Western Ghats, this rare and vividly colored amphibian is found only on the upper slopes of Anamudi and Meesapulimala, making every sighting truly special.
It’s among the most brilliantly colored frogs in India — glowing with shades of red, orange, and yellow.
It lives in the montane grasslands above 2,000 meters — a habitat often wrapped in clouds and rain.
This species was discovered only in 2010, adding to the growing list of fascinating Western Ghats endemics.
Unlike many frogs, it’s direct-developing — meaning it skips the tadpole stage and hatches as a tiny froglet!

Grace in Green. Spotted this Günther’s Vine Snake (Ahaetulla dispar) elegantly hanging from a tree bark in the lush hills of Munnar. Perfectly camouflaged among vines and branches, this slender beauty is an endemic species of the Western Ghats — found nowhere else in the world.
Unlike its close cousin, the common vine snake, this species has a more uniform green coloration and slightly upturned snout, helping it blend seamlessly with the canopy. It’s a rear-fanged mildly venomous snake, relying more on stealth than speed to hunt small frogs and lizards.
Watching it hang motionless, blending effortlessly with the forest — it’s easy to see why nature is the best artist of all.
