🇿🇼 Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza has been appointed Chief Justice of Zimbabwe, effective today, 15 May 2026. The appointment was confirmed by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya, and was made in terms of Section 180(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Justice Gwaunza has a strong background in the judiciary, having served as Deputy Chief Justice since 29 March 2018. She steps into the role as Zimbabwe’s justice system is being reformed to improve efficiency and access to justice. As Chief Justice, she will manage the courts and protect the judiciary’s independence. These responsibilities are central to Zimbabwe’s constitutional system.
