𝗕𝘂𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗷𝘀 by Honey Jones-Hughes & Antonio de la Hera de Appel Kiosk 11, 12, 24 July at Albert Cuypmarkt 25 July at Dappermarkt 10:00–17:00 The Kiosk returns to Dappermarkt and Albert Cuypmarkt in July this year. Three proposals have been selected from an open call: 𝘉𝘶𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘫𝘴 by Honey Jones-Hughes & Antonio de la Hera, 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘉̶𝘢̶𝘯̶𝘬̶ by Saemundur Thor Helgason and 𝘥𝘦 𝘢𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘭 by Özgür Atlagan & Ulufer Çelik. For de Appel Kiosk, the artists have adapted 𝘉𝘶𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘫𝘴 (2020-22), an ongoing project that questions ‘local’ and ‘ethical’ food production through the making and selling of ice cream. From the outset, the project was an experiment towards selling ice cream as a way to financially support the practice of artistic research. Over time the price of the ice cream fluctuated before settling in a solidarity model — where customers bought ice cream for the same wage as they themselves earned. During their time on the market the artists will be further developing their solidarity payment structure with the use of an interactive pinboard that displays transactions in real-time, effectively exposing all previous transactions to participants, passersby and curious customers. The artists invite you to think about how alternative ways of thinking about value could apply empathy and access to food producers, while savouring a real ‘Amsterdam’ flavour ice cream.

It’s almost been a whole month since we delivered Cover Crop Cocktails, a lecture-performance in the form of a proposal for a future play at @kunsthuissyb ! Our artistic research into the role of cover crops in regenerative agricultural practices and the intricacies of Frisian soil, breeds, and species took us down many different paths, and assumed a variety of different forms. To echo this we wrote a number of different scenes to narrate those different moments of surprise, contradiction, frustration, limitation and maybe even a little bit of eureka (the “in-a-sublet-studio” variety). We’ve still got many questions we’d like to keep asking, scenes we’ve yet to write, and connections in Friesland we’d like to keep nurturing, so we’re looking forward to seeing how this develops over the next few years. Thanks to @lavinia_xausa for taking these images on the day, Kunsthuis SYB for hosting us, @cbkrotterdam for the support to make all this public, @benweir.arch and @for.opacity in the sublet studio, farmer friend Gerrit for being Gerrit, and to all who heard our incoherence gradually make (some) sense over the course of our staged lecture.

Kunsthuis SYB welcomes artists Honey Jones-Hughes and Antonio de la Hera for their research residency “Planting Mustard (preliminary research)” from February until May 2024. The artists embark on a research period into cover crops, with a particular focus on the application of mustard. This research stems from previous research into sustainable farming practices in Friesland. Planting Mustard (preliminary research) is marked by two by stays at Kunsthuis SYB, where the artists continue their engagement with those living and working in and with the area. The residency concludes with a public moment on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Find more info via link in bio! Last year we went on residency with @b_r_o_d_o.art , interested in a small cooperative dairy next to an Italian lake by the town of Lago in the Veneto region. We wanted to understand their way of working, which having seen glimpses of parts of the mammoth industry in The Netherlands seemed almost idiosyncratic. How does a cooperative run today? Along the way we uncovered a parallel network of people working in their own small but significant ways, maintaining and cultivating their cultures and dialect, at the margins of a recently-ish defined UNESCO heritage site for Prosecco, a worldwide export and household name of its own. This Social Field Study charts that moment, the people, in both English and Italian. We met a lot of people during that week! Thank you all for your time. And a very special thank you to Alfred and @nhellji for hand-delivering a copy of the map back to the people we met. It was a nice way to bring the project ‘full circle’ with you. Weeks ago now, we organised a little outing to see what’s happening with all our leftover things, discarded rubbish, compostables and other unwanted items in our city, as part of TENT’s exhibition Sustaining Small Acts. You could say we were asking...What’s in a Packed Lunch? The event was designed like day trip inspired by the format of a school trip. Participants were given a packed lunch and went along a pre-determined route to meet an expert. We visited the offices of an international commercial waste company, Renewi, and made a second stop at the Grondstoffenstation, a grass- roots initiative in Rotterdam’s Afrikaandermarkt which aims to recoup and process all the market waste on site to benefit local residents. The lunchbox we made used ingredients from local farms and producers, some of them waste products, all with interesting packaging. Also included was a small “ingredients list” outlining source of ingredients and also the “waste” created in the process of the day. Thanks to all who joined, and to Esther and Anke at TENT for all the support! Pics: us and @danieltuomey @renewi_nederland @wijkcooperatie @tentrotterdam

Thanks @sparkberryburgum for the crash course in cover crops. Unwanted weeds to most, these ones are doing more than a little bit to keep the soil, fruit trees and bushes healthy (and uneaten). Still… not all weeds were welcome. Appreciated how some were also indicators of imbalances in the soil. Was great to see this actually put into practice while researching in Friesland :) 1 - I think this is one of their old signs that the hedge has growing over 2 - Comfrey / Smeerwortel 3 - Vetches / Wikke 4 - Red catchfly / Dagkoekoeksbloem 5 - Dandelion/ Paardebloem 6 - bindweed (bad) around a type of thistle (good?) 7 - Ox-eye Daisy / Madeliefje 8 - a typical coffee filter with some ‘natural’ pest control. Not bothering with Latin names cause I am a n00b

Was given this school bank note at the Schoolplaatmuseum in Deinum, last week, when starting the research with Honey @kunstinitiatief.vhdg They are so generous with their huge collection of schoolplaten and other materials, and encourage thumbing the searching through the stacks of their collection. Worthwhile visit! They didn’t know how the note was used, but probably some kind of societal role play. Nice coincidental bridge from our previous board game research at @worm.piratebay (all the different notes also here). We didn’t have time to make our own notes there but maybe, one day, we will meet an Adolfo Kaminsky chemist character keen on making a very nice note with an elaborate Rotterdam design of our own (if you are reading this message me please!)

Starting some research today at @worm.piratebay with @honey____honey A few unexpected board games we found along the way. Fave part was a full electronic set to be assembled (maybe as a part of the game?) for a former technical college in Rijswijk. #archivalgold ? We’ll be playing some board games in the bar at Worm this Saturday, 4 march, from 15.00-18.00. Feel free to join us in working out the “gamified” Dutch insurance systems (and pls bring soldering iron)

Since May last year, we’ve been busy trying to set up a micro farm for seaweed in our kitchen. Some seaweed actually survived! Some grew! The setup we pieced together is far from sustainable, there is much room for improvement, but it has been an interesting experiment into the reality of urban farming. We have self published this DIY guide (link in bio), with an introduction by fellow farmer @kate_rebecca_price , a lengthy text detailing our thoughts and challenges, and a step-by-step guide if you happen to be as daft as us. Some physical copies available too, priced at €10. You can pick them up from us and have a look at the aquarium which is still buzzing away in our kitchen, nurturing some sugar kelp seedlings from @hortimare . We can also post them too, and send you a photo. The project was supported by the experiment grant scheme, @stimuleringsfonds (2022).

Some images from ongoing research into how seaweed is cultivated, thinking about how the sea is harnessed/exploited and what re-creating sea conditions is. 1 + 2: Satellite images of south Korea, the island in the close up, Sisan-ri, is about 2km wide at it’s widest part. 3: the different kind of seaweeds in the north sea, and the different depths they prefer to grow in. 4: a rendering by North Sea Farmers of a plan to use spaces between wind turbines for seaweed farming (also lobsters and solar!) Does it remind anyone else of Minecraft? 5: how carbon travels in a seaweed farm at sea. 6: a more realistic diagram of the carbon chain... key detail, the estimated duration of each ‘loop’.
