With this collective trio, Henry Threadgill observed, “each time we come together to perform, it seems brand new… We’ve got three composers here. Every time the music changes, it holds up a different world, because it’s coming from a different place – because of each one of us, [and] our different approaches to composition.” Join us for a rare NYC performance this Friday, November 14 at 7:30pm at @92ndstreety tickets: linktr.ee/vijayiyer

“Listen Ship” — Out now on @pirecordings Henry Threadgill – compositions and conductor Brandon Ross - acoustic soprano guitar Bill Frisell - acoustic guitar Gregg Belisle-Chi - acoustic guitar Miles Okazaki - acoustic guitar Jerome Harris - acoustic bass guitar Stomu Takeishi - acoustic bass guitar Maya Keren - piano Rahul Carlberg - piano Listen Ship was made possible by a commissioning grant from the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation Listen Ship is the latest masterpiece in the ever-expanding sound world of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill, whom The New York Review of Books recently described as “one of American music’s great Romantics and a lifelong seeker of the sublime.” The new work is a suite for six acoustic guitars – including individual stylists such as Bill Frisell, Miles Okazaki and Brandon Ross – and two pianos that utilize Threadgill’s unique intervallic syntax to illuminate his idiosyncratic vision. The eight string instruments revel in the music’s painstaking detail with intricate gestures that miraculously entwine to form a grand statement. The meticulous orchestration highlights all of the usual characteristics of Threadgill’s music: unusual forms, unexpected timbres, and slippery counterpoint and rhythms, all shaped by the composer’s conducting into a singular experience

The video of the American Book Awards ceremony from October is finally available online via CPAN. Here's a short clip: the extraordinarily generous comments from host Justin Desmangles about Henry and about the book, and my acceptance speech... Justin Desmangles: "[…] in the interest of time, I'll say very briefly that Henry Threadgill is certainly one of the most gifted and visionary composers in the music that today we know as jazz. He has not only inspired the imagination of his listeners, but has also staked out a unique territory in what is often described as free jazz that embodies an approach -- or even a philosophy, one might say -- that freedom is a choice that you make in every situation all the time. So it's not as if you just one day decide you're free and you step over here and that's your thing. No, no, no. It doesn't work that way. It's something that you must present with rigor and a powerfully deciphering attitude in every single situation that you face. And Henry Threadgill has really done the lion's share of work when it comes to bringing musical expression to this principle and not relying or taking for granted what it is that we must desire for ourselves and others in achieving this. And so it is a truly extraordinary that, through the powers of listening and conjure, this man whom we're about to meet in a moment, Brent Hayes Edwards, has been able to grasp this intuitively, and apply his passions towards the understanding of bringing those words and that music from Henry Threadgill into the form of this book. And speaking for myself, I am deeply grateful for the work of this scholar, and it is a great pleasure to welcome to the stage Mr. Brent Hayes Edwards, receiving the American Book Award for Easily Slip into Another World with his co-author Henry Threadgill." #henrythreadgill #easilyslipintoanotherworld #easilyslipintoanotherworldalifeimmusic #americanbookaward #americanbookaward2024 @henrythreadgill @pirecordings
