“As it turns out, The Furies is told as a paraphrased campfire story, interspersed with American folk music sing-alongs, (...) the transition to the warm and inclusive second act is welcome and intriguing.”

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING A ROUND ARK - a primordial flood story
Composed by Stanzi Vaubel & Philippe Treuille
The Indeterminacy Festival Presents an ambitious new chamber opera, DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING A ROUND ARK, reimagining one of humanity’s oldest surviving stories. Unfurling in three parts, the work tells a Babylonian version of the flood: written a thousand years before Noah’s Ark. Bringing this tale to life are three soloists, joined by an intergenerational consortium of Brooklyn-based choral singers and instrumentalists, conducted by Yonatan Dvir.
Set in a richly imagined polytheistic world, the opera explores the creation of humanity as a solution to the gods’ burdens—only for that solution to spiral into chaos. As humans multiply, their noise and presence provoke the wrath of Enlil, king of the gods. Enlil attempts to reduce the population through plague, drought, and ultimately a devastating flood. Each time, Enki intervenes, culminating in a secret warning to build a life-saving ark.
Featuring: Alexandra Lang as Enki, Michael Anderson as Atrahasis, Bert K Johnson as Enlil. Created in collaboration with a vibrant consortium of artists—including the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Bass Ensemble, Grace Chorale, BK Treble, New York Choir Project, and musicians from the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra—this production blends ancient myth with contemporary musical storytelling.

“…Nolan Kennedy as Hamlet, who plays the character with a degree of ironic self-awareness that lightens the mood even as the character contemplates the annihilation both of himself and those upon whom he seeks revenge.” —Thinking Theater
