How about this! Back in 1984 just one month before Top Secret! hit theaters, there was another box-office smash - Breakin'!!
In this clip from @80sLife we get a glimpse of HelMel back in the '80s. Somehow it doesn't surprise us a pivotal scene was shot on the corner - starting with Turbo's iconic broom dance to the moment Electro Rock confront Turbo and Ozone.
Break it to make it!!
Some exciting news. We’ve moved… everything under one roof!
The move may only be about 200 feet west from the original location, though in the great pioneering spirit of 'moving out west' the short pilgrimage combines the gallery and studio into one creative, conceptual sandbox.
The expansive space will allow us to host and showcase artists from every medium, allowing us to present large scale installations and introduce community workshops.
We can't thank all of the artists, guests, and collectors, who support the creative arts and our commitment to the community enough. Without you this would not be possible.
More announcements to come!
Love this video collage, showcasing the 34 original sketches by Chilean artist, @victor_castillo_art . Part of SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW / a solo exhibition by VICTOR CASTILLO - Email [email protected] to schedule a gallery visit, Mon-Sat 11am-5pm.
@valkilmerofficial and @helmelstudios are pleased to announce the next exhibition at his gallery, Somewhere Over the Rainbow by @victor_castillo_art . The solo exhibition features new work on canvas and paper in a personal tribute to the world of cinema. The exhibition opens Saturday, April 10, 2:00 – 8:00 PM and will be on view through Sunday, May 9, 2021.
Finding inspiration from some of Castillo’s favorite films and animated features including The Birds, The Bad Seed, Snow White, Wizard of Oz, and Oliver!, the exhibition Somewhere Over the Rainbow will include seven new paintings on canvas, ten on vintage lobby cards, a sculpture of Castillo’s classic characters, and a limited edition 192-page hardcover monograph published specifically for this exhibition, with texts by Val Kilmer, Merry Karnowsky, Kirsten Anderson, Monte Beauchamp, and Miguel A. Lopez.
For Castillo, “Light is everything. It allows me to construct the emotional atmosphere that stands out and makes the stories. More than the paintings in museums, my reference for light has always been the movies and classic animations.”
“Victor executes brilliant color and light, compounded with seemingly sweet but often twisted themes. These tenets set the mood in his paintings. Whether you like them or not, you just can’t stop looking at them. They move you,” writes Val Kilmer. “There’s an innocence; a Golden Book era agelessness that has deep undercurrents of social wretchedness. Each work is a real magical mystery tour, crafted by a truly gifted artist.”
What a day! With the upcoming reopening of the gallery, we were excited to launch the new VALentine Collection. And what response!
Thanks to everyone who visited the Emporium. We are sold out of the items at the shop, though they are still available for purchase, for a limited time, at the online store.
The collection will be pulled at the end of Feb or as items sell-out.

The past four days have been incredibly saddening and most definitely, maddening. We'd like to take a short moment to share our gratitude to each of you. By all means, we may not have the same beliefs, though as we are all part of the human race, we have a profound love for you. And we hope the glimpse of what we share, through social media, gives you faith in our heart's motive - to promote love, encouragement, community, and resilience.
All of us at HelMel find it culturally impactful and necessary to search for diverse artists and we are fortunate to have members from all around the world. Beyond celebrating uncompromised talents, we are always exercising empathy, understanding and respecting differences in worldviews, but there are certain things we will not stand for. At the top of this list are racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, any form of divisive rhetoric, or hate and aggression towards anyone are simply not tolerated here.
We are proud to cultivate a community that welcomes artists of different cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, all genders and sexual orientations. To be blessed with the rich diversity of artists and have such a strong representation of people of all walks of life is the core of our strength. We are better for it and we believe everyone who walks into the gallery is better for it. We hope each of you continue to keep an open heart and create art, because your voice matters and we want to see it, hear it, share it and celebrate it.
@valkilmerofficial asked us to share a little behind-the-scenes setting-up for his interview with @goodmorningamerica , airing tomorrow morning.
This past month Val has completed photo shoots for The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Men’s Health, to name a few.
Each shoot had strict requirements to ensure everyone’s safety, though one thing Val was adamant about was showcasing the artists who have chosen HelMel to exhibit their art. Works from @ericnashart , @boskohrnjak , and @flowersforauggie served as backdrops.
For his interview with Good Morning America, Val made a special request to artist, @victor_castillo_art , asking if he could to hang some of Victor’s art created for the upcoming ‘Dreamland’ show. Ever so gracious, Victor obliged.
Here is a glimpse of some of the paintings and be sure to catch Good Morning America tomorrow morning to see more!
We are anxious to share details about the new exhibit dates. Until then, stay safe and stay healthy everyone!
We know Coronavirus (COVID-19) has impacted many parts of your life and we are eager to welcome you back to the gallery when the time comes. For now, we must make the health and safety of our friends and crew members our top priority and we will continue to take guidance from health agencies and government officials.
Though we felt it important to celebrate our upcoming exhibit 'Dreamland' by artist @victor_castillo_art . The exhibit was scheduled to open this evening and @valkilmerofficial and the crew here have been working hard with Victor and all of the artists scheduled to exhibit at HelMel to create something even more special in the months to come and we have some exciting announcements coming.
While we were very much looking forward to this crisis being past us, we do want to share some wonderful photos of artist Victor Castillo, in his studio, working on his 'Dreamland' series.
Postponing the exhibit has opened new possibilities and greater focus for all of the upcoming artists and we can't wait for you to join us in celebrating their art and to escape and be inspired by their extraordinary worlds. Stay strong and stay safe.
