ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴡᴇ ᴅᴏɴᴇ, the last album in my two-part set of albums based on the movies “Drive My Car” and “Distance,” is out now on @underwatercomputing ! There’s a limited amount of cassettes and minidiscs for sale and you can stream it in my bioooo 🌀🌀🌀

Earlier this year I got really into the Japanese films Distance and Drive My Car. Both are two very different but very emotional movies - Distance having very little dialogue, pretty much no music, and a super intense subject matter, and Drive My Car having a stellar soundtrack and emotional, earnest exchanges between the characters. I recorded 2 ambientish albums based on them, basically serving as the soundtrack filling in the quiet cracks in Distance but with vocal samples from Drive My Car for extra depth and feeling. The first one, 𝔀𝓮 𝓶𝓮𝓽 𝓪𝓽 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓷’𝓼 𝓰𝓪𝓽𝓮, is out now digitally with tapes from @retrac_recordings 🦌

This Saturday @hellomalk is joined on our monthly show on @great_circles_grcr by @eev.fr , a prolific musician who we had the pleasure of dropping a tape release of their celebrated album “Chamber Music” late last month 🌀 In-store or online 4-6pm at greatcircles.net

This Saturday 4-6pm @hellomalk returns to @great_circles_grcr providing a 2 hour slice of the Japanese wave of idm, house, and some other headier sides of dance music from the 90s until today. We were going to do this theme when we were close to getting towards a similar release we’ve had in the pipeline for a while…but we’ve seen a lot of people online talking about the wave and decided we should get ahead of ourselves! Expect to hear choice tracks from Sublime Records, Shinichiro and Susumu Yokota, as well as some of the newer artists working in the same tradition. In store or online at greatcircles.net

We at @sweetchunk didn’t just grow up in Baltimore, we grew up in WHAM CITY. This Saturday on @great_circles_grcr @hellomalk is doing a 2 hour deep dive into the music associated with the scene and Whartscape, which some publications in the 2000s referred to as the most important DIY music event taking place at the time. 4-6pm in store or online at great circles.net

Closing out the year on @great_circles_grcr this Saturday with an all-vinyl, non-comprehensive session of jazz from Philadelphia. TGAAZ VINYL IS AVAILABLE NOW 3 years ago we released a passion project at Sweet Chunk, which has now been graciously re-released on vinyl by our friends at @homeassembly with completely redone artwork by @jamesparis___ to dodge the obvious incoming copyright offense from the first album cover. The Geese at Astra Zeneca is a collaboration between brothers and SC founders @hellomalk and Henry as well as frequent collaborator and friend Darian Smith (@spuul215 ) . The name references a literal gaggle of geese that live, work, and play on the grounds of the AstraZeneca pharmaceutical campus situated just outside of Wilmington, Delaware. Visible from I-95, Henry would travel weekly between the group’s Sweet Chunk HQ in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, looking outside his car window to see this regular cast of characters. Rain or shine, they would be there, always seeming to live without a care in the world, completely oblivious to the looming logo of corporate misery they’ve chosen as their home. Their first album, “TGAAZ at AZZ,” is the product of a single, 3-hour improvised session recorded with one microphone in the living area of their Philadelphia warehouse in the summer of 2022. Afterwards, MALK took this recording and isolated, reworked, and expanded it to create 13 off-kilter experiments. Sitting somewhere between free jazz, instrumental hip-hop, and perhaps some punk, “TGAAZ at AZZ” is a frantic, challenging approach to the intersection of jazz and beat tapes - yet it’s spoken with a playful, familiar lexicon.
