Lady Mary Ann is also known as the song the Trees They Do Grow High, The College Boy or Lang A-Growing. 🌿
Collected all over Scotland, Ireland and England, the song is said to have had a factual basis in an arranged marriage in the 17th century between Young Urquhart of Craigston to Elizabeth Innes in 1633. This version is from the singing of both Jean Redpath and Lizzie Higgins.
The earliest printing of the Scottish ballad is in James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum (1792)
