'Sweep Down to the Sea' takes place on Friday 15 May, a spectacular celebration of one of Ireland’s most enduring cultural figures, Percy French.
Percy French (1854–1920) was one of Ireland’s most influential songwriters and entertainers, remembered for his sharp observations, gentle humour, and deep affection for everyday Irish life. A prolific writer of songs, poems and sketches, his work often captured the character of rural communities, the experience of emigration, and the smal absurdities of human nature.
Best known for songs such as 'Are Ye Right There Michael' and 'The Mountains of Mourne', French had a rare ability to combine humour with insight and gentle social commentary. 'Sweep Down to the Sea' captures the wit, charm, and soul of his artistry.
This performance explores French’s life and work through music, song, and storytelling, highlighting the wit, warmth, and humanity that have kept his writing alive in Irish culture for generations.
Eleanor Shanley is one of Ireland’s most respected vocalists, with a career that has included colaborations with Ronnie Drew and De Dannan. She is known for her exquisite interpretations of Irish music and her connection to Percy French’s poignant lyrics.
Singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon is widely admired for his distinctive voice and thoughtful approach to performance. He has previously shared stages with artists such as Mary Coughlan and John Martyn, and his delivery adds depth and nuance to French’s material.
Jimmy Higgins is a versatile and accomplished musician whose career includes performances with The Stunning and Christy Moore. His rhythmic briliance and energy add a vibrant pulse to this celebration of French’s legacy.
