Elsemarijn Bruys’s first solo exhibition at Heejsteck#, presenting both reinterpretations of earlier works (such as PUFF, MORPH and WARP) and new experiments, offering a clear insight into her practice. Bruys creates minimal interventions with maximum impact, subtly disrupting how we perceive space. Using reflective materials, colour and rhythm, she challenges our habitual experience of light and air, prompting us to question what we consider “real.” The title refers to our instinct to focus on ourselves, especially in reflections, but invites us instead to engage with the broader spatial experience. While her work appears impersonal and precise, it is rooted in a personal exploration of visibility, presence and taking up space.

It’s Not About Me marks the first solo exhibition by @elsemarijnbruys (1989, NL) at Heejsteck#. The exhibition brings together new iterations of key bodies of work, PUFF, MORPH and WARP, alongside more experimental pieces that push her exploration of form and material further. Together, they offer a precise and immersive insight into her practice: a kind of hall of mirrors in which minimal interventions generate maximum effect. Through her works and installations, Bruys engages with two fundamental elements that continuously surround us: light and air. She subtly disrupts the way we habitually perceive them, as neutral, self-evident phenomena shaped into coherence by the brain. Her works function as carefully calibrated spatial interventions, small shifts that interrupt the expected, heightening perception in ways that are both disarmingly simple and remarkably effective. Their work explores the thin line between seduction and illusion, taking the shopping mall as a starting point once a symbol of the future, now often an empty shell. Within a constructed, cave-like environment, their sculptures and paintings reflect on our shifting reality, where appearance, consumption and identity continuously overlap.
