Almost two weeks since Austra - Chin Up Buttercup: The Movie came out! Thanks everyone for watching, link in bio in case you missed it :)
The shoot last summer was super fun and also very challenging. Right after I arrived at Katie's cottage, a massive storm knocked out the power, and then we started getting loud buzzing tornado warnings on our phones every 5 minutes for hours. Katie's mom texted that we should hide under the dining room table to be safe, but instead we BBQ'd burgers and ate them in the dark.
The electricity didn't come back on until late afternoon the next day, just after we said fuck it, let's start shooting. I guess sometimes you just have to start things.

Made this 45 second video a while ago, but seen here on the interwebs for the very first time! "Another Movie About My Mother" premiered at Sundance in 2021 as part of the excellent @weirdonight film. (please enjoy with the sound on)
For a few days in the desert, we celebrated our dear friend Jibz for her 50th! It was a beautiful queer bubble of friends and sunshine. I didn't want to leave. As the world continues to implode, the only thing we have is each other. Cheesy but true.
Fun fact: I broke my wrist the day before the longest shoot day of "Before Us." I was with @dynastyhandbag in Pacifica, slipped on a rock at the beach in my Birkenstocks, and heard a pop. My wrist immediately ballooned.
The following day, I headed down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz. In my little rental car, I drove around 300 miles up and down the coast, into the Santa Cruz mountains, and then back to San Francisco. I captured the best footage of the whole movie, but I almost didn't go because my wrist hurt so badly.
Thanks to Jibz for taking care of me and to @saaramatthews for pushing me to shoot even though I was injured. And thanks to tripods for always holding it down.

Atom Egoyan joins us to moderate a Q&A with Before Us director Hedia Maron and composer Joseph Shabason on Sunday March 24, exploring how we first learn narrative structure, drama and comedy from our families.
As a direct result of the free love era, 1970 was the peak year for adoption in the United States. In her first feature documentary, Maron delves into her hippie motherās enigmatic past, unearthing a hidden family legacy of lost siblings.

Here's a sneak peek of the incredible score @josephshabason made for "Before Us." In this scene, my hippie mom takes my 6-month-old sister to Altamont.
When I first heard this track, I cried. This happened often when Joseph sent me music. Am I emotionally unstable? Perhaps, but the music has a quiet urgency that's super effective.
Joseph is a multi-instrumentalist, genius weirdo, and all-around funny dude. He will join me for the Q&A moderated by Atom Egoyan after "Before Us" screens at Hot Docs Cinema on March 24th at 3pm.

As a direct result of the "free love" era, 1970 was the peak year for adoption in the United States. Filmmaker Hedia Maron delves into her hippie mother's enigmatic past, unearthing a hidden family legacy of lost siblings.
At 19 years old, Linda Goldfine left her family's home one morning, went to her job at Filene's Basement in downtown Boston, and then disappeared for the next three years. Forty years later, her daughter Hedia pushes her to disclose what happened during those lost years living on California communes. Linda reveals a complex family history set against the backdrop of a time when notions of "free love" collided with virtually no reproductive rights for women, creating the largest generation of adoptees ever in American history.
