"On March 20th, around 4 pm EET, listening through the WebSDR receiver at the University of Twente – a shortwave antenna tuned simultaneously by strangers across the world – the radio wrote its own script. Voice, accordion, and the Rumble of Ancient Time dissolve into a subliminal play of frequencies across the world. A guest appearance from an owl from my balcony in Sofia, Bulgaria, which holds the ground. Laughter surfaces on both ends of the dial. Fifteen minutes between a balcony and the rest of the world."
Viktoria Nikolova is an interdisciplinary sound artist, vocalist, and researcher based between Bulgaria and the Netherlands. Episode 4 of A Case for Libretto is tonight.
For this edition we take a deep and rather eclectic dive into 29 years of Sofia Underground International Performance Art Festival — one of Bulgaria's longest running platforms for performance and radical art. We'll be introducing artists from past editions and talking about what's happening right now, on the festival floor in Sofia.

Sofia Underground Radio — Live Broadcast
On the 24th of April, Sofia Underground International Performance Art Festival goes on air.
From OKI Krasno Selo in Sofia, Viktoria Nikolova will open a three-hour live broadcast – a radio transmission rooted in the performances, conversations, and sounds of this year's festival edition. Artists' interviews, music played, and presence carried through the frequency to whoever is listening.
There is something particular about live radio – the knowledge that somewhere, thousands of kilometres away, someone is sitting in the same moment as you. Not a recording, not a replay. The same breath, the same now. For three hours, Sofia and Rotterdam will share a frequency, and the underground will become audible beyond its walls.
And yes – a worm has found its way underground. Radio Worm from Rotterdam joins as co-presenter, because apparently, the underground is exactly where worms belong.
Sofia Underground Radio is a new broadcast project growing out of the festival – a first transmission and a beginning of many more.

A Case for Libretto returns to @radio.worm for the second episode! A special guest will be Yves_O, also known as Ivo Ivanov. Ivo is a multidisciplinary artist from Sofia with a keen mind and a sharp tongue, whose words and sound move us on the dance floor and in the heart. He will join us on the phone from Sofia, and we will ask him about words, nature, walking in the city, performance, and where their crossings are. He is a driving force behind the Sofia Underground Performance Art Festival (@sofia.underground ) and was one of the key figures of Studio Dauhaus, Sofia’s first independent art space. He will share about his involvement in the first edition of SFERA (@this_is_sfera ), the first immersive audio event in Sofia, which will happen on January 17th @ Toplocentrala. A case for libretto is our radio series exploring experimental forms of nonlinear narrative. In each episode, we invite a guest artist to share their practice and join us in reimagining the libretto as a fluid space where text, voice, and sound intertwine. The series move between live performance and discussions around the artist’s works, and become a collaborative space to explore how stories might unfold through the medium of radio.
With Isul Kim ( @merz__lng ), we have collaborated on various projects where we turn everyday curiosities into performative experiments with voice and electronics. It is somewhere between opera and not opera. Post-opera I would say and agree with Isul that it is another social situation. Together we are two characters cooking up a recipe, read sideways: random, risky, and full of fragments that turns out something almost familiar.
Our first radio episode opens with poet Omer Mirza , an observer of people and paradoxes. Together we explore bipolarities, resistance, and the eternal fight to kill the loneliness — how consciousness both isolates and connects us.
Through our conversation, we will look at the paradox of individuality: the more we turn outward, the more we lose the quiet center within? Or do we?
The poetry at the heart of this episode unfolds through and around Omer’s words, woven with our collected sounds and some curated songs that will create fragments, atmospheres, and voices that mirror the tension between self and world.
This pilot moves through questions of awareness, consumption, and self-preservation, asking how we can stay awake in a world that numbs us — how to resist, connect, and stay human in the noise.
