I am playing folk songs @breitenbush_hot_springs & giving a True Voice workshop for WOW MAY 23rd! Swallow Song by Richard & Mimi Fariña is actually an adaptation of one of the most famous Sephardic ballads La Rosa Enflorece, a very old folk song! I love singing both these songs together- moving from the gorgeous poetry in English to the old Ladino lyrics, all about the suffering of love! I used to love the Swallow Song by the Fariñas then one day I was playing an old vinyl of Sephardic folk songs and realized the connection. This is what I love about folk music — how it is meant to be turned over and over in many hands, remade into our own, fresh for this moment in time and culture, alive in this way but also so deeply rooted in a collective soul that something so deep speaks to us even if we don’t know what it is, we feel it. An old folk song has such a strong yet maleable identity from collective experience, countless versions, and its inherent commonness, not owned by any single person or entity, and beyond constrictions of rules or pressures of grandiosity as other arts are… that’s how I hold it. That’s why I love it. It belongs to the folk, free to roam through living culture collectively… #folksongs #sephardic #ladino #folkculture

I co-founded an herbal Honeybrew jun and artisanal fermentation company circa 2013, @iggysaliveandcultured , developing all the Honeybrew recipes, the branding, Honeybrew logo (pictured here), built the brewhouse team, threw the warehouse parties, and more. I left in 2018, they’ve continued on with great heart and care but just shut their doors for good, a bittersweet end of an era! SELF-TRUST. Artist, Healer, Clown Witch, Nora Harrington, a ride-or-die bestie who continually inspires me, just started a new short-form podcast exploring self-trust — And I am her first guest!! It is a short & sweet 30 min convo that immediately drops into the heart of the matter — cuz girl knows me almost as well as I know myself & has held my hand through many of my biggest life moments. I believe there might be some treasures in there for y’all, confirmation or inspiration for your own ways you find to trust yourself… Nora is a brilliant, multidimensional artist and healer - always has been. She’s a therapist who shares power with her clients, specializing in couples, chronic single hood, sexuality, vaginismus. As Clown Witch, she holds space for liberating and listening to her own wild strangeness (check her drawings, music videos(!), and someday her comedy show… Follow along with her at her Substacks: God and Stuff Like That. Our friendship is one of those rare gifts for a lifetime, incarnating together — at fifteen we met as extras in a Gilbert & Sullivan play (our lines: “hub hub, hub hub” mumbled under our breath), then were in Teen Talking Circles together (a nonprofit founded by my mother to spare us from teenage hell, in which we learned how to authentically communicate our truth & work through conflict the real way. Our fights are RICH, but thus far we have always worked through them and are better for it). Reconnecting in mid-twenties, we made art, herbal magic (The Wheel Medicine) and life together, and somehow, miraculously, we continue to evolve together, our processial beings inform the other’s and resonates us back home - moist of the time! Friendships like this are part of the ever-important work of breaking from the chains of nuclear-partnership-family that leave us all isolated and relying too much on too few for our needs. We need that circle of real, trusted, reliable, evolving, practical, fun, juicy, creative, deep, loves. Shout out to queer culture for showing us all the way on this one.

Just make the strange thing that’s calling you. it doesn’t have to be great. It just needs to be made. To me this is the epitome of healthy folk culture — folks make art and share it with folks— we create our own culture, we make our art for our friends, for our greater community, for ourselves, for this moment we’re in and how we feel about it, what we’re working with in our bodies, minds, dream space, subconscious, opening to whatever to come through. Playful creative expression opens channels of expression at large, in other arenas of our lives, I have found, and brings a lightening up, a joyfulness, and vibrancy. We need creative expression to stay embodied, I feel- and there are so many forms it can take… This was the 5th Surrealist Cabaret — 8 acts & short films between. Lots of quirky magic. I wish I had captured a bit of them all, mostly I was just enjoying too much to film.
