250 miles west of Richmond, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the crystal clear water of the Cowpasture River meets the black water of the Jackson River to form the James River.

The Kepone disaster (50 years ago) in Hopewell, VA is just part of a continuing legacy of industrial pollution on the James River. Allied Chemical, Life Sciences and now Advansix have all been major polluters (legally and illegally) on the tidal James. We should hold these corporations accountable for the health of the waterways they use and abuse for profit.

Truly grateful for all the folks who helped make this film happen. From my crew to the trainees, trainers, shop staff and drivers - thanks for letting me hop on a boat, strap a GoPro to your helmet, or get a quick interview on your lunch break!
I’m proud of this little film and I learned a lot along the way. It was a privilege to watch so many people step outside their comfort zone and attempt to learn how to guide folks down the James River. It’s incredible how much work guides and raft companies put in to share these beautiful spaces with guests.
I hope to raft with y’all this season! In the meantime stream ALL FORWARD! And book a rafting trip with @rvapaddlesports - don’t forget to tip your guide…

In 2023-2024 the sewage leak was a major issue for months in Pipeline Rapid. Eventually the city temporarily fixed the problem, then completely severed the pipe from the system. Now that the city no longer is using the pipe, the trail is closed indefinitely to the public. A huge bummer for river access in Richmond - but at least it’s clean for now!

Thankfully, this 2023-2024 leak has been fixed. Unfortunately, Pipeline Trail remains closed (likely permanently). Most of the time the James is clean but infrastructure problems persist in Richmond.
