Earlier this Feb, I had the opportunity to speak with several devotees while documenting Thaipusam.
While many families were preparing for the procession, I was particularly drawn to a family supporting two brothers who had taken over the role of kavadi bearers from their father, who retired seven years ago.
There is an astonishing amount of labour that goes on behind the scenes. The kavadi weighs between 100kg to 115kg and are entirely handmade(!!!). Their father, a veteran of the craft, spent 72 hours hand-assembling the frames to sourcing peacock feathers.
Seeing the physical toll the families had to go through and the prep work involved was just wow insane…felt so much respect for their dedication…
Already a month since the best wrestling/gig show of the year??!! 😱(objectively true)
Here’s a throwback from that crazy night of action and music
Thanks all again for coming down! Watch this space for updates about future shows.
We’ll see you all again soon 👀
