This year I’ve tried to get outdoors and draw as much as possible. But It hasn’t always been easy, particularly when the elements and cows conspire against you.
Yet I’ve found that for every somewhat bleak day, the next time I go out and draw will usually be more fruitful. Battling the elements and adapting my expectations of what I can do on the day, has been an stoic exercise. Ive learnt to not force a drawing, not every time will you make a masterpiece. Sometimes just the act of slowing down, being immersed in nature and concentrating on a view can be worth it.
These Pastel drawings are part of my series which looks at Avonmouth, the industrial port of Bristol. Something about it I find really dystopian and exciting. I think it’s all the massive cranes and bits of infrastructure which juxtaposed with the surrounding rolling Hills.
They are available to furnish your walls, links to my shop can be found in my bio :)
Here’s a recent painting overlooking Falmouth docks, gouache on primed grey board. I’ve just moved down here so has been nice to get out and explore new places.
The painting took 2 days and as you might notice, looks slightly unfinished, that’ll be because I got told off for some mild trespassing. Wether I attempted to finish it is another question. The best view are often not in the public realm:)
Heres some inky numbers from a recent mission to Port Talbot. I’ve wanted to go and draw the steel works for quite some time and when I climbed up the hill the view did not disappoint! The weather was however slightly fiercer than I had expected, forcing me to work in pen and ink. Although not the pastel sketches I intended on doing I’m happy with the end results.
The M5 over Avonmouth, another pastel sketch adding to my series exploring the strange mixture of motorways and port infrastructure around Avonmouth #pastelsketch #landscapedrawing #bristolartist #enpleinair

Today I went to @play_rangers_bristol to get some canvas, here’s a video of how I turned them into new primed boards, follow @hatch_design for more. #enpleinair #bristolartist #pastelsketch #alfrescoexcursions #landscapepainting
