I’m remembering nick today, on what would’ve been his 30th birthday, with a new Hardly Relevant tape: “songs from the other room”
this second release of nick's voice memos focuses on his solo work, specifically his guitar playing. i was hoping to put together a collection of polished recordings, but that's not what nick left behind. instead i found ideas at all stages of completeness, and when i finally let go of the idea of a traditional compilation, i realized that these were truer to nick's presence than any finished recordings could ever be. they're alive with an energy, playfulness, and creativity that all who knew him will instantly recognize. they're the sounds that accompany my fondest memories of him, floating through the open windows and doors of homes full of friends and warmth. nick is out of sight, but just barely, enjoying the comfort of a solitary moment, knowing that those who love him are close at hand.
