Here is our third and final show piece for Stephanie Tsai Karlik’s new book Shanghai Seduction. “Command” deals with the human power play and its currencies; sexuality, personal boundaries, party culture,  and dominant subordinate behavior both in bed and at the street level. There are many ways to lose your compass, as the book states, when individuals drift far from those that hold them accountable.  Some of this can add thrill to the grand adventure. At other times it can become downright threatening.  Shanghai is the seductive sandbox in which the full spectrum of experiences lay in wait.  You’re either in or out. I want to especially thank our talents Jenny Ahn, Chris Goldie and Chase McGuire for really taking risks with us on set and activating the imagery. None of this would have happened had it not been for our talented technical crew led by Kenneth Yeung my DOP,  Travis Chao our editor, and finally Joel Bewley who did an awesome job on our final comp images of the city.  The tone and great vibes were all set to custom tracks due to be released soon by talented DJ and musician Johan Pålsson. This imaginative and provocative novelization activated a number of us to create in collaboration on these promo pieces. This segment, entitled Consume, speaks to carnal pleasure, raw and dynamic human chemistry and the food lust of the city. At long last we’ve gone live with Shanghai Seduction. “Flight” is the first of three promo videos celebrating the release of the Shanghai Seduction paperback. Shot in both Shanghai and in LA, Flight marks my return to directing after a long time focusing on just camera work and producing. It’s been a very rewarding collaboration with both Stephanie and a team of great filmmakers and close friends. This was all done to promote this expressive novelization about a city and I time that we all loved. I’ve wanted to connect with this subject and these images for a long time. I too was cast under the spell of this dynamic city which always leaves a unforgettable impression.
