For Tom Hanks' legacy beyond Hollywood, the actor built a company out of one of his daily habits — coffee — to support the military.
"Hanks was adamant that all of the profits from the coffee go back to support the cause.
'He takes nothing; he makes nothing from this,' Meyer-Hawkes said. 'He’s been very clear on that.'
HANKS remains mission-driven, and the profits from the coffee go to four vetted organizations: Hire Heroes USA, Student Veterans of America, the Headstrong Project, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. "

Major Donald A. Rogers, of Bloomington Indiana, served in the Allied Military Government in Italy and Austria during WWII. His granddaughter, Susan Houseworth, shares that she has undertaken a twenty-year process to transcribe over 2,500 pieces of saved correspondence between Mr. and Mrs. Rogers during the war.
She notes “the insights into his service, his dedication to democracy, and his longing for peace and reuniting with his family are heart-wrenching, noteworthy and could have been lost forever with the passing of time if I had not found them in 2001.”
The letters, written in the standard cursive, are made harder to parse due to the V-mail delivery service. ‘Victory Mail’ was a hybrid mail process used by the US during World War II, as a way to limit shipping space and ensure privacy. The letters would be censored, copied to film, and printed back to paper at about one-quarter the original size upon arrival at their destination.
Despite the difficulty, Susan Houseworth’s “labor of love” is to ensure a tangible representation of the experiences, and sacrifices made by American soldiers during the war.
We are honored to bestow a Hanks For Our Troops Challenge Coin to Susan for her efforts, and so excited to share her family’s story.
