The article reflects on electronic music, digital technology, and perceived reality, linking shamanic ritual, experimental music, and provisional interfaces to explore how reality is filtered, translated, sampled, and reconstructed. Science and technology can translate and reconstruct the analog world into a digital one by extracting certain segments of information from the world (filtering), analyzing those samples (sampling), and then rearranging them (patterning). Examining this mechanism of analyzing and translating the world through technology provides one way to understand how we perceive it. - in electronic music and computer music, the function of the sound card is not to block or transmit, but to translate. it's a two-way translation, not a one-way flow. from this perspective, the inside and outside are in relation; we don't prioritize either. pre-order now (Aloe-008) We are pleased to release the duo album by Yan Jun and Ryu Hankil: ‘all words return 翱卧瑞吞’. It was recorded in Shanghai in 2024 and completed in Beijing in 2025. The Shanghai recordings are imbued with an eerie sense of multiple spaces compressed into a single moment in time: This includes Yan Jun’s vocals echoing within a small room, fictional narratives and reverberations within Ryu Hankil’s Max/MSP patch ⑥, and a cacophony of outdoor street sounds interspersed with MAI mai’s occasional guitar practice. Later, before their concert in Beijing, they spent a few days at Mount Changbai. During this time, a shift in their collaboration became palpable, with the woody sounds emanating from Ryu Hankil’s ⑧ and Yan Jun’s shaman-like voice returning to a kind of primal ritual. He started his career as an electronic musician in 2005, exploring the potential for producing different music through non-musical objects. In vitro #31 Last-minute announcement following our 30th anniversary and stint in NYC: This Saturday, April 18, It’s our absolute pleasure to present a unique performance by Korean computer musician, writer and improviser Ryu Hankil. As a central figure in Seoul’s underground, Hankil has long explored the possibility of generating another kind of music through non-musical objects. His practice revolves around the question: how can sonic thinking affect world-building? A different kind of reflection that creates fiction in diverse ways; an attempt at reconfiguring today’s reality, something that feels more necessary than ever. He’ll be joined by sound artist Florence Cats, another kind of world-builder, exploring the theremin as a socio-political instrument, assisted by these same “objects.” Her work blends music, visual art and poetry, and reflects on their relation from perception to notation. mardi 14 avril 2026 Ryu Hankil Zheng Hao > Ryu Hankil Ryu Hankil est un musicien informatique, improvisateur et écrivain basé à Séoul. Depuis longtemps, il explore la possibilité de générer une autre forme de musique à partir d’objets non musicaux. Ses interrogations et sa pratique autour de la manière dont les vibrations inhérentes à un objet peuvent constituer un contexte musical l’ont amené à réaliser que le pouvoir spéculatif de la pensée sonore crée des fictions de multiples façons. Pour mettre cette compréhension en pratique, il utilise activement les interactions entre la synthèse par modélisation physique et l’écriture sonore. Il se concentre désormais sur le pouvoir spéculatif de la pensée sonore, explorant comment celle-ci peut générer des musiques différentes, fonctionner comme un nouveau système cognitif et reconfigurer fondamentalement et profondément la réalité actuelle. Ryu Hankil est notamment membre de FEN (Far East Network), groupe de musique improvisée avec également Otomo Yoshihide, Yan Jun et Yuen Chee Wai. > Zheng Hao Née à Wuhan et basée à Londres, Zheng Hao utilise principalement des instruments électroniques pour l’improvisation en solo et en groupe, et compose parfois une musique électronique dance aux sonorités dérangeantes. Max 6를 기반으로 작성되어 여전히 Max 6에서 작동 중인 나의 리듬머신이 운명의 기로에 서게 되었다. Windows 11로 운영체제 변동이 생기면서 어쩔 도리 없이 운영체제 업데이트를 고려하던 중에 갑작스러운 불안감이 뇌리를 스쳤다. 그 불안감에 조사를 해본 결과, 역시 Max 6가 Windows 11에서 설치가 안 된다는 소식을 접한 것이다. 단순히 설치가 안 되는 것이 아니라 전체 Windows 시스템 부팅에 심각한 오작동을 일으킨다고 한다. 그렇다면 Max의 최신 버전으로 업데이트를 고려해 볼 수 있다. 하지만, 이 또한 확인해 본 결과 Max 6 이후 버전은 기본적인 음향 알고리즘에 변화가 생겼는지 내가 작업한 리듬머신 패치의 특정한 소리 구현이 버전 6 이후 버전부터는 제대로 구현되지 않는다. 다소 불안정하고 거친 소리가 출력되도록 만든 부분이 부드럽게 처리되어 평범한 소리가 되기 때문이다. 결국 지금 작업을 유지하기 위해서는 Windows 업데이트도, Max의 업데이트도 불가하며 Windows 10과 나이가 같은 내 구형 랩톱은 이제 모든 점에서 기진맥진하는 중이다. 그래서 운명의 시간이 내가 기대하던 것보다 더 빠르게 다가올 것이라는 예상이고 그렇다면 남은 시간 내가 이 리듬머신을 어떻게 활용할 것인지가 문제가 되었다. 세계 구성에 관한 음향적 이해라는 측면에서는 가산 합성보다 감산 합성에 더 흥미가 많으므로, 당연히 모든 음향적 존재의 토대로 작용하는 백색소음에 대한 관심도 크다. 리듬머신 패치로부터 시작된 “나머지들의 연속체” 시리즈는 이 세계가 감산 합성의 과정으로 누락시키는 것들을 다시 그러모으려는 심리 음향적 시도이고 거기에 필요 이상의 의도가 개입하는 것을 막기 위해 “우연히도 계획된 사건의 배치”를 작곡하게 되었다. 이러한 방법으로 발생하는 음향 결과물들을 상호 중첩하고 이를 반복하면 특정한 소음 덩어리를 만드는 것이 가능해진다. 이제 시스템적인 이유로 시한부 판정을 받은 리듬머신은 또 다른 토대를 생성하기 위해 반복 작동한다. 이 소음 덩어리는 내가 Max도 Windows도 사용하지 않게 되는 시점에서도 유일하게 다른 작업의 시도를 가능하게 하는 새로운 음향적 토대가 될 것이라고 기대한다. #알고리즘픽션 #리듬머신

다섯번째 알고리즘 픽션은 물질세계의 음향적 토대인 노이즈가 아닌 다른 토대를 구성하는 문제에 관해 생각해 봅니다. 먼저 리듬 머신과 청각 형상의 이야기를 다루는 과정에서 나머지들의 연속체가 소환된 상황을 설명하고, 나머지들의 연속체가 증식하여 토대가 될 수 있는지를 청각화 과정을 통해 실험해 봅니다. 또한 토대로 향하는 증식을 촉직하는 촉매로서 작곡 작업이 활용되는 과정에 관해 설명합니다. * 일시 : 2026년 3월 21일 (토요일) 오후 7시 - 8시 입장료 : 사전예매 30,000원 (15명 한정) 장소 : 음향사변 예매 신청은 프로필의 링크를 확인해 주세요. #알고리즘픽션
