We started shooting together in 2021, and created OPEN in 2024. Last year we joined
@roadsandkingdoms and today we’re excited to announce that all episodes of the series will be released on their platform in 2026.
OPEN is shot entirely on Super 8 film. With a self-imposed limit of 3 rolls per episode, we have just over 10 minutes of footage to capture our story. We also inject photography using vintage Nikon, Contax and Polaroid cameras. Because of the limitations, we have to be meticulous about what we capture.
@motioneer is the director and the guy doing the bulk of filming and editing, has to plan out everything before we go in. As he says, “You’d have to be insane to do what we’re doing. The stakes are incredibly high and we have no safety net.”
For our narrator we wanted someone with a David Attenborough quality, but with a connection to food. In
@thejameschatto we found both, an incredible gift for narration (show business is in his blood; his father was Tom Chatto and his daughter is Mae Martin) and an esteemed authority on cuisine who’s been Canada’s preeminent food writer for decades.
@ivyporkchopknight is the producer, writer and interviewer. And the crew is rounded out by the talents of
@echo_cyp &
@bloorstreetsound who are in charge of lighting, sound and photography- and in the upcoming episode (to be released later this year) took on filming in Super 8 as well.
OPEN is a film series celebrating restaurants, made by a bunch of friends in a city in Canada. But it’s really about the people who make restaurants great, and those people can be found in every city.
