Remy Styrk (@remystyrk ), a local trans photographer who grew up in Kansas, is the driving force behind “Halogen,” a project providing free photoshoots to local trans people of color. “With the free photoshoots, I’m just trying to create a space that I wish I had,” Remy told Chloe Collyer (@chloetry ), who shadowed a photoshoot on behalf of CHUM News. Photography can help trans people “define what autonomy and visibility mean to them,” Remy added. Today, almost half of America’s trans youth have reported serious mental-health struggles, according to recent surveys by The Trevor Project. And the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate government funding for trans-focused healthcare and research have made this crisis even worse. The majority of trans youth struggling with their mental health now report that they lack any access to mental healthcare, leading many to search for support outside traditional clinical medicine. In one of the nation’s largest majority-white cities, which is struggling to support artists amidst a tech bubble bursting, Chloe saw two artists who’ve adopted Seattle as their home, two trans men of color, laugh playfully as they collaborated together to make images.  🔗 Link in bio to read on

In this new era I’m trying to allow myself to be more visible. Recently I met a really dope Black Trans Man who is a photographer and is doing a dope passion project called @halogenproject showcasing Black Trans and Queer folx I thought this was a really amazing opportunity to shine some light on an often forgotten piece of the queer community. In a time where we are being told we don’t exist, it feels great to unapologetically claim my space #transman
