Museum Special Exhibition 2025: She is I – The Knitting Experience By Halla Lilja Ármannsdóttir (@hallaarmanns ), curated by @corrangreen
A dialogue of knitting expressions in the form of fashion, art, sculpture and jewellery. Exploring nature, material and family lineage.
For Halla, knitting is more than a technique – it is a conversation with time itself. Halla stretches the boundaries of tradition, blending past and future, soft wool and rigid horsehair, mechanical precision and human touch. Her work echoes those who came before – and whispers to those yet to follow.
The museum’s general opening hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, from June 1st to August 31st each year.
Special exhibitions run from the opening on June 1st through April, as many groups visit the museum throughout the year by arrangement.

Development of; The Path
A piece inspired by hikes in the highlands, walking in the sheep paths between landmarks we know as Vörður 🪨🐑
The colour is a reference to Grænihryggur, a turquoise splash of colour in the middle of golden, brown and green landscape.

‘Mon Jardin’, is a collection of 9 wallhangings that together create a story of lost handkerchiefs, now frozen in time. Currently on display at @heimilisidnadarsafnid
The handkerchiefs represent diverse inner emotional states presented through the idea of ‘my garden’ and the interpretation that how well we take care of our garden can represent how well we take care of ourselves and/or presentation to others.
Each piece has its own motif made out of a composition of traditional lace patterns and asymmetric lace work. The pieces are all knitted on an industrial knitting machine with a blend of cotton, wool and linen, crocheted onto a stick of wood, collected from my garden and hung with a braided Icelandic horsehair that is secured with rose gold wire. The placement of the rocks was informed by the pattern and colour of each piece, creating either a balance or tension within them, also hubg with braided horsehair.

The past 2 months during a research project I have been developing a way to work with colour within my sculptural pieces, mixing five threads to create gradients and contrasts.

Last month I had the honour to share my work in NYC during the @newyorktextilemonth with other great nordic artists at @scanhouse under the curation of @frodadottir . What a special event and time to celebrate textile art and design!🥂🫶
To make the experience even more special I travelled on behalf of @handverkoghonnun to be at the opening of the exhibition! 💛

I had such an amazing time @unionhousearts this summer where I spent 3 weeks in their art residency. During my stay I focused on spinning 🌞 I arrived with a drop spindle borrowed from @heimilisidnadarsafnid and was lent a standing spinning wheel by one of the locals week into my stay 🙏🏻💛 I spent my days working in the studio, hiking the trails, picking blueberries, eating good food, swimming and enjoying great company! 🫐
Thank you for having me @unionhousearts , can’t wait to see more of Newfoundland, until next time xxx
