The results are in for the first annual Middle School and Upper School Public Speaking competitions, and the winners are seventh grader Lauren C. and tenth grader Zaira Sammi, respectively!
The students who entered both contests were tasked by Head of School Charles Franklin to answer the question: Which virtue is most important for Hackley students to embrace?
The three finalists from each division — Annie M. ’32, Lauren C. ’31 and Henry K. ’30 in Middle School and Zaira Sammi ’28, Norah Mott ’29 and Shreyas Kuniyil ’28 in Upper School — delivered their speeches in the final round on the Diller Hall stage.
All of the participants did an outstanding job!

What better time than Teacher Appreciation Week to announce that Upper School History teacher and Senior Class Dean Melissa Stanek ’90 has been awarded this year’s Anton and Lydia Rice Inspirational Teaching Award!
The award is presented each year to a member of Hackley’s faculty who, in the estimation of the Senior Class, "has lit and sustained the fire of learning and inspiration, stimulated their intellectual curiosity, and inspired them in positive ways to seize the day and grasp the challenges they will face in the years ahead."
Congratulations, Mrs. Stanek!
