Today is the one year anniversary of my album Orchestrations 🩲 We are still standing. In something of a surprise celebrasie of its first solar rotation I have released a surprise live concert recording with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra closely tied to these sessions. Surprise! It was the very night that kicked off this whole debacle of orchestral works. This live track is now out on all reputable streaming platforms. It's also available on Spotify. Go see if you like it. It's possible you don't. Stay well. Best wishes. Luv&lite
And just like that I'm heading off to my favourite planet within the planet 🇮🇳 I haven't left South Africa since my last USA tour in February 2020. To be honest my desire to travel these last 2 and half years has been pretty min after two decades of constant missioning. Despite this, the unstoppable itch to return to India has prevailed. It always does. I'll be doing a bunch of shows through the country kicking off this weekend in Delhi before heading further East to Thailand for some more concerts. I'll update you along the way. In the interim, here's a snippet of a performance with my brothers @amjadtabla and @mudassirsarangi from our recent SA tour. Full 20 min video coming soonish.

GUY: Hey Shane. I see you're in town tonight. Keen to join me at this gig later?
SHANE: Sure, but I don't have my bass with me. I do have a synth in the car though?
GUY: Cool. I've never seen you play keys actually. You keen to smash a synth/sitar thingy?
SHANE: Cool. What we going to play though?
GUY: No idea.
SHANE: Also cool.
SHANE (post-gig): If the authorities knew about this.... tickets.

Proof of life 👋 A little improv captured recently whilst trying to capture something else that is now seemingly lost forever. Perhaps this was what we were trying to find. All is not lost. Who's to say.
Hi there. It's Guy here.
Reverb miraculously produced by the magic box that is the @tonewoodamp ✨
@guybuttery playing his acoustic guitar with the ToneWoodAmp2.
Studio-quality effects like reverb, delay and more, all controlled in real time.
This sounds seriously cool.

After what I think may have been my longest stretch off the road, I’m happy to say I’m heading back out on tour, and this time with one of my oldest choms, @nibsvanderspuy ✨ It's been awhile.
For reasons that escape me now (seated in the warm bosom of home) we have decided to take this show across the country, with dates in the Cape, the Eastern Cape and in the Garden Route. But first, we’re starting right here at home in KZN with four special shows to warm the engines.
Deets below. Let’s go. Come hither.

Trail cam video dump. Full marks for the shnoofling porcupine. Special mention for the whimsy of the mongoose. And extra points for the caracal on his morning stroll. What a planet hey 🌍
I am so very proud of my brother @davefrederickgardner / @123innisfree . Thee who shows no fear. Dave drops his first single release today and it's so very, very, very pretty. The arrangements and production are lush AF. Yoh! It's turned out rad. A zen paced supernova of sorts as is the tale contained within. I was lucky to assist a bit with the recording as well playing some sitar on the track. Dive right in peeps! Full album due later in the year. Link in the comments 🔗
I must have been eighteen or nineteen when I made a dedicated trip out to the giant record store that was Look&Listen at the Pavilion in Westville. I’d read an interview about an album in a guitar magazine and something in the way it was described made me feel as though I needed to hear it. Somehow the store had a copy. I carried it over to the listening station, put on the headphones, and almost immediately felt myself leave the room.
What came through felt as though it had descended directly from the cosmos. I didn’t have the language for it then, but I was witnessing a fundamental shift inside my world. Hindsight tells me this was a pivotal moment. Before and after. It was the first time I experienced music in three dimensions. With shape. Colour. And texture. Synesthesia?
That day kicked off a loooooong road with the music of Ralph Towner. I fell deeply, obsessively in. I tracked down every record I could find, side projects, obscure collaborations, countless bootlegs and became a hardcore devotee of his band Oregon. Close friends will know that in my early twenties, I listened to little else but Ralph.
I dedicated a piece to him on my second album, and later Nibs van der Spuy and I did a version of one of his tunes on our first duo release, one of the very few covers I've ever recorded.
Sail on, Ralph. You leave us with so much. We’ll keep flying the flag for you down here, as best we can 🫀
