Two works from the archive are currently showcased at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde. The current exhibition ‘It’s all right, don’t think twice’ is an ode to the abstract, conceptual and ephemeral artist from the gallery. Early work by Guy Mees interacts with the architectural division of the room by ordening chrome beams on the ground. In contrast with this early and rough work, a soft works from his ‘ballerina series’ at the end of his oeuvre is showcased. Two thin chalk papers float over each other. It reminds you of a skirt which is poetically enriched with flowers. Still on view until Sunday, June 16th. ––– Slide 2: Guy Mees Untitled, 1998 watercolor on paper, 2 sheets (red, pink) 50 x 80 cm Slide 3: Guy Mees NO ARTWORK, 1970 unpolished chrome 8 x 90 cm, 8 x 80 cm, 8 x 70 cm, 8 x 60 cm, 8 x 50 cm, 8 x 40 cm, 8 x 30 cm, 8 x 20 cm, 8 x 10 cm Installation images by Gallery Sofie Van de Velde ––– Gallery Sofie Van de Velde ‘It’s all right, don’t think twice’ South Gallery (Vlaamsekaai 74, 2000 Antwerp) Until June 16, 2024 @gallerysofievandevelde

Various works are currently displayed in ‘These Circumstances’ at Fondation CAB, Brussels. Several generations of artists go in dialogue about themes like image and reality, the unlimited pictorial space, construction and deconstruction. This exhibition runs until June 29, along the work by Willy De Sauter, Johanna von Monkiewitsch, Katinka Bock, Greet Billet, Manon de Boer and Céline Mathieu. Thank you to Gallery Sofie Van de Velde and Fondation CAB to make this possible. ——— Fondation CAB, Brussels ‘These Circumstances’ Until June 29, 2024 @fondation_cab @gallerysofievandevelde

We are pleased to announce the opening of ‘Eucalyptus’ in Gallery Sofie Van de Velde at Gallery South, a duo exhibition showcasing work by Guy Mees and Johanna von Monkiewitsch. Both Mees and von Monkiewitsch emphasize with their work a relation to spatial interventions. While Mees uses a line to break the architectural space, von Monkiewitsch evokes a spatial choreography by the usage of light in her work. ‘Eucalyptus’ Opening 30th of March 13h until 18h Gallery Sofie Van de Velde Gallery South Vlaamsekaai 74 2000 Antwerp @johannavonmonkiewitsch @guy_mees ——— Guy Mees Eucalyptus, 1976-78 pastel and pencil on paper (green, red, blue, pink) 125 x 161 cm Johanna von Monkiewitsch 17.04.2015/14:04, 2024 Pigment print folded and framed 166 x 125 x 5 cm unique work 1+1AP #gallerysofievandevelde #antwerpartgallery #antwerpcity #conteporaryart #sharingarthusiasm #guymees #johannavonmonkiewitsch

'Talking back to Ellsworth Kelly & Blinky Palermo: Guy Mees' cut-out horizon' in @gallerysofievandevelde . Curated by Dirk Snauwaert Singular within the evolution of formalism, Mees’s body of work, a fundamental or minimal kind of painting, is the culmination of his consistent search for, and transgression of, the limits and rules of abstract art, as well as all manner of painterly conventions. Currently on view: 'Talking back to Ellsworth Kelly & Blinky Palermo: Guy Mees' cut-out horizon' in @gallerysofievandevelde . Curated by Dirk Snauwaert Even as the twentieth anniversary of Guy Mees’s death approaches, his visually and sensorily exuberant cut-outs remain a highly intriguing body of work. How best to view them? As the definitive departure from classical painting or as spatial-architectural interventions? And what to make of their overarching title, Verloren Ruimte (‘Lost Space’)? Mees defined these works in his extremely pared-down and delicate way, as abstract strips of coloured paper pinned directly to the wall, with the imperfections of the jagged edges and seams left exposed, as if such details would in any case be outshone by the colours and rhythm. The field and plane in which they move is not bounded by a frame, however, as if they were the ultimate end result of the search for the ‘unbounded’ pictorial space initiated by Spatialism in the 1950s.
