Introducing the three incredible choreographers behind Desert Hothouse: Katina Olsen (@katolsen ), Madeleine Krenek (@maddykrenek ) and Frankie Snowdon (@franksnow1200 ) 💥 Each of these choreographers has been developing their work for Desert Hothouse for the past SIX years, working with joy, integrity and curiosity to bring their visions to life. They have been leading and collaborating with teams of incredible artists and designers over this time, a real engine of contemporary dance development. There are heaps of things we’re proud of this year, but one of the biggest was the Mparntwe premiere and following interstate season of SUB by Ash Musk. It was a slippery, dark, interrogation of the volatility of the natural world, our existence within its dichotomies, and our responsibility for care and evolution in the face of what’s to come in a rapidly shifting climate. We are so proud to have brought it into the world and to have shared it with such inquisitive, generous and grateful audiences in regional places. Big thanks to @assembly.197 for their partnership in bringing it to life, to @theunconformity for their insistence, commitment and support, the @araluenartscentre for being our home and helping to create the world for the first time, and all the funders who contributed to making it happen over and the 3 years it took to mould it into its final iteration - @creative.gov.au , @regionalartsaustralia , Arts NT, @redhotarts , @supercelldance . Desert Hothouse features three brand new works - White Lies by @katolsen , territory by @franksnow1200 and Public Property by @maddykrenek . Powerful, urgent and thematically entwined, they explore sovereignty, self-determination, control, empathy and myth making. Counting on an epic team of 26 exceptional artists and arts workers from around the country, Desert Hothouse is our most ambitious project to date. EXTENDED WORKSHOP ALERT! 5:45 - 7:45pm | TUESDAY 21 APRIL Next week’s open contemporary class will be a special longer workshop co-facilitated by current SPILL resident @cecilmartin & collaborator @eriinorourke 💜 >> In this workshop, Cecilia and Erin will share their love of improvisation. Inspired by recent years of study in Brussels under David Zambrano, Cecilia and Erin will guide participants through scores inspired by Zambrano’s improvisation practice, in combination with their own experiences of over a decade of dancing and performing improvised work. Participants will explore how to harness their own personal experience in their dance, shape energy in the moment, and create spontaneous compositions. Open to all levels, from those new to improvisation to experienced movers, this workshop offers a supportive environment to be both nurtured and challenged. NEW & RETURNING CLASSES! From Term 2, Wednesday nights just got groovier with a new class for 12-16yr olds and the returning Men’s class! LITTLE GUTS CONTEMPORARY FOR 12-16yrs In this class, the young participants will learn more complex contemporary dance techniques, including floorwork and short movement phrases. They will also work on improvisation, and develop their own style and sequences. No experience necessary! Email [email protected] to sign up! Cost: $120/term or NTG Sports Voucher + $20 MEN’S CLASS Men’s Class is open to all male-identifying people who want to come and learn dance, regardless of experience or background. The class explores rhythm and timing, a range of dance styles, and a strong focus on contemporary movement, body flow, and sequencing—creating a space to build confidence, connect with others, and move freely. SPECIAL WORKSHOP WITH @golden_thursdays 🔥 This Tuesday 3 March our regular contemporary class will be longer and more exciting than usual, with current artists-in-residence Golden Thursdays sharing insights into their creative practice: “This workshop is an introduction into some of the processes Golden Thursdays (GT) uses to create dances and will begin with a slow, guided movement warm-up. Participants will follow GT as they tune into their bodies and respond to sensation, allowing impulses to lead into movement. Following the warm-up, GT will teach some dance phrases they have constructed over the past few years.The workshop will conclude with the group remembering and choosing new moves that emerged during the guided improvisation. With GT’s guidance we will collectively refine these new elements and explore how they can be woven into our choreography”. Huuuuuuge thanks to everyone who came out to our first SWEATBOX season last weekend at the studio! We had an absolute blast creating these short works for our dear local audiences, and really appreciated the chance to do something instinctive, sharp and personal. Thanks to your generous support we raised $4000 towards Desert Hothouse, bringing us that much closer to reaching our goal.
