Thank you to everyone who join us for our Unhomely in conversation. A special thank to Dr Errol Francis, Director of Culture&, the team, and the Museum of the Home for organising the event. 💐
In Perpetuum is installed within the Museum’s period rooms until Sunday 30 August 2026 💥💥💥💥
‘In Perpetuum’ is a new commission by Culture& (cultureand_) and Museum of the Home is part of ‘The Unhomely’, a public programme co-produced by Culture& that examines how histories of migration, displacement, belonging, and Identity shape personal and collective understandings of home. 💥💥💥 @museumofthehome@leyla.huysal@supuhuysal

Join Dr. Errol Francis, Director of Culture&, in conversation with me and Leyla Huysal (@leyla.huysal ) and Yusuf Huysal (@supuhuysal ), on our new sound piece ‘In Perpetuum’ installed amidst the Museums period rooms.
The event will begin with a collective listening of the work, followed by a discussion exploring how this new commission engages with The Unhomely – a concept from Sigmund Freud’s 1919 essay das Unheimlich. Often translated as “the unhomely” or “the uncanny”, the idea describes the unsettling feeling of being alien or out of place within a familiar setting.
🔊 The Unhomely – In Conversation
📅 Wednesday 22 April, 6.30pm - 8.30pm
🎫 Free, but ticketed

✨ Visit the Chapel in our Rooms Through Time gallery to hear 'In Perpetuum', a newly commissioned multi-sound experience by artist Güler Ates (@guler.ates1 ), in collaboration with Leyla Huysal and Yusuf Huysal.
Each time someone listens, the experience is different as the elements loop across four channels at varying durations, creating moments that have never sounded quite the same and never will again.

I’m thrilled to share that my etching Wing of Yellow II (23.8 × 23.7 cm, 2021) was selected as the cover image for the hardback publication Women’s Historical Fiction Across the Globe 💥💥💥💥
Edited by Dr Catherine Barbour and Karunika Kardak, and published by Springer International Publishing AG under the Palgrave Macmillan imprint (ISBN 978-3-031-36359-7).
Women’s Historical Fiction Across the Globe explores contemporary women’s historical fiction from global perspectives and expands substantially on existing studies by drawing on intersectional, transnational and decolonial approaches to examine texts originating in different languages and engaging with diverse time periods, contexts and cultural settings.
Etching edition is by amazing Simon Lawson Prints ❤️ @simonlawsonprints@openhandopenspace #royalacademylibrary #royalacademy #photography #etching

‘Archipelago: Visions in Orbit’ is the final project from the MA Curating Art and Public Programmes 2023/24 cohort, featuring a group show of six artists, who we’re spotlighting during the exhibition.
Güler Ateş, originally from Turkey, moved to London in 1998, studying at Lewisham College before earning a BA in Painting from Wimbledon School of Art and an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art in 2008. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally, with solo shows in Washington DC, Mumbai, Turin, and London.
Ateş’s performance ‘Woman Under Kitchen Utensils’ is featured as part of ‘Archipelago: Visions in Orbit’. Performed by Zoe Simon, the work involved Simon dragging a seven-metre-long train of blue satin adorned with kitchen utensils from Whitechapel Gallery to Brick Lane Food Hall and back. Documentation of this performance is available to watch on our YouTube channel.
In the gallery, images from a previous iteration of this performance are displayed alongside the sound piece ‘Shore to Shore’, created in collaboration with Leyla Huysal and Yusuf Huysal.
