Thomas Voss

Currently completing a Master’s of Music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Thomas Voss has enjoyed a diverse career as a trombonist, composer/arranger and educator. He has performed at the Melbourne, Perth and Sydney International Jazz Festivals, and was featured at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2019 and 2024 International Jazz Day concerts, with his big band headlining the latter event. Voss was nominated for the 2022 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, was shortlisted for a South Australian Music Award in 2019, and placed first in the International Trombone Association’s 2017 Carl Fontana Jazz Competition. Voss has penned several hundred compositions and arrangements for a wide variety of ensembles and artists, including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and Australian National Jazz Award winner Lauren Kate Henderson. He has also served as Composer-in-Residence for the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, JazzSA Youth Superbands and Creative Original Music Adelaide. A committed educator, Voss also previously served as Artistic Director of the JazzSA Youth Superbands, and taught at primary, secondary and conservatorium levels.

Last year @lauren_kate_henderson was kind enough to ask me to add some string quartet arrangements to her beautiful debut album. There was a little room for some unaccompanied strings on the album - here’s a reimagined introduction to Billy Joel’s ‘Just the Way You Are’ that I’m quite proud of; featuring Holly Piccoli, Ali Rayner, Stephen King and Tom Marlin laying it down at @wizardtone . Here’s the opening of the fourth movement of my String Quartet, expertly performed by Helen Ayers, Janet Anderson, Stephen King and @twmarlin as a part of the 2023 @creativeoriginalmusicadelaide Featured Composer Program. Due to some last minute personnel changes Janet and Tom came in and learned the whole quartet in only a day or two - incredible! Not sure that it’ll ever be performed again, but I count myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to write it at all and hear such stellar musicians perform it The full video is up on my Youtube channel - link in bio
